Having worked my way through dozens of variables I have come to the conclusion that the properties I want simply don't exist on this screen, which is a shame because it would have been good to show the name of the programme, the broadcast time, and the plot for the selected item in the same way that the Radio EPG does it.

If you have logs set to debug then you would usually see them in mediaportal.log yes.
You can cache what you want but personally from experience i would not cache larger images because it can impact gui performance if you cache too many at a large size. This option does not just cache them to bitmaps like normal it holds the images...
