Basic Question: TS-Buffer File-Size (1 Viewer)

Hi @ all

just got a question about the timeshift-file-size:

in my network - timeshift got an dedicated 60 Gig HDD 2.5".

so what is better - a file size about 256 MB?
or better to make the file size bigger ? (up to 512 or 1024 MB)

if i change the filesize to 512 (min 50 files - max 100 files)
i think sometimes and after a while the audio is not sync anymore ..

(YES i need that big timeshift buffer -
my little daughter - 5 months young - often wanna have
some attention when we watch (HD)-TV - i love the "pause-button" on my remote )
and - i have the space in my TV-Server/on the HDD


so what is better - many "small files" or it is better to choose "bigger-files" ...?
or is that unimportant ...

I don't think it particularly matters if <ts file size> * <number of files> is the same.

Hi there,

This is in interesting one... and there are advantages and disadvantages to both large and small.

Potentially there can be issues with ts switching and latency - but only on slow HDDs - so it can be better to have large files which means less occurances of switching.

But there is an overhead on file creation - and also file deletion.

You will need to test on your own system/spec.

I run mine on a ramdrive - so don't have any issues (as far as I can tell).

hmmmm i am not sure but i think i choose very big files @ my neighbours HTPC ...

and now (with 1.1.2) audio and video often is asyncronous @ live TV... :-(

have to check that again the next days ...

But there is an overhead on file creation - and also file deletion.

File size doesn't make difference to file creation / deletetion speeds.

You are correct in that file size does not affect creation/deletion, as its just the allocation table that is updated, and not actually the underlying data within the file (on the disk), what I was trying to say was that there is an overhead in opening and closing a different file (please correct me on this too if I'm wrong)
