Best timeshift config for multiple clients?? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I have often wondered what is the "preferred"/best setup for timeshift files when you have multiple tuners (and multiple clients).

Take my setup....

I have:
8GB for timeshifting
4 tuners
3 clients

Is it better to keep all timeshift files in the one directory/folder, or to put them in the their own?

Then the question is how many and what size (taking into account the rewind/pause type of functionality)?

I have a similar setup to yours, and I have no problems with the default timeshift settings.

I do find that some of the newer 'eco friendly' hard drives can be a bit slow, which I suspect is partly due to the drive and partly due to the network, so I make sure my timeshift and recording folders are on a 7200 rpm drive, and I never seem to have problems.

I was wondering how the actual timeshift/file/tuner logic works? Is there one file per tuner? Per transponder?

Does recording use a timeshift file?

This might be a stupid question, but are you sure you have plenty of free space on the timeshift disk?

Timeshifting config is a bit more complex than it first appears.

There are two settings depending on whether you are talking about pausing TV (20 files, which should be enough for a good while) and actual timeshifting, which has about 40 minutes (depending on bitrate).

Either way, with the default setting as long as you have 20 x 256 MB + 256MB (overhead) = 5.25 GB free per tuner in use, you should not hit the limit.

Ah, missed that. Yeah, with 8GB you will run out of space. At some point I remember reading that it actually needs double.

Why only 8GB? Do you really only get smooth TV when using a RAMdisk? You would probably be better to get a small 7200 RPM drive for timeshifting. This is what I use (it is also the system disk) and I see no issues.

I got some pointers on how to mathematically work out how many files and their size to make sure that the RAM Disk never runs out of space.

Jay - that is a really good point about having a single folder for all tuners to shift to vs. having a separate folder for each.

I would initially say that it would make no difference, however I would really interested to know if this is not the case.

I personally have everything shifting into the same folder and it works perfectly, but if there is any suggestion that using separate folders would be improvement, I would definitely have a go.

Yep, I'm using a RAM disk. In the past I have found it the best (as you'd expect).

I suppose I could use my SSD - but I'd hope 8GB should be enough for general timeshifting.... I might add an extra 4GB...

I understand the concept of paused versus timeshift.... but I wasnt sure how this worked with multiple tuners having all the files in one folder?

99% of the time I only have one client, sometimes 2 (including iPimp), never had 3 clients running at once - and as recording doesn't use timeshift that should be ok.
