A better way of doing a video wall

    2 way navigation
    Horizontal navigation is via category
Vertical navigation is via sort order, eg. title

    Example View By Title

^ we have horizontal navigation is Starting letter, vertical navigation is 2nd letter of title.

    Example View By Year

    year.jpg

Scrolling past bottom of screen makes the subgroup overlay bounce downwards so it's always visible

Dyanmic grouping, if one subgroup doesn't have many movies then it is grouped
    Example S,T,U-V,W,Y-Z,A,B,C

Stopping on movie shows info overlay, options to play etc.

    Advantages of video wall:

    1. 2 directional scrolling = faster / less clicks to find movie
    2. Using the mini movie details overlay can see movie details without having to dedicate large part of screen to a static window showing details, this means more thumbnails on the wall.
    3. Similar thing can be done for music

Example implementation #1 View Mode: Wall: Artist (Sort Name) | Wall: Album (Sort Year) | List:Track

    Level One
    Horizontal A,B,C,D,E,..
Vertical Apple, Art People, Acorn, Ardvark

    Level Two
    Horizontal 2013,2010,2005
Vertical - albums belonging to that year.

    Level Three
    Track list

Example implementation #2 View Mode: Wall:Albums (Sort Album) | List:Track

    Level One
    Horizontal: A,B,C,D,..
Vertical: Albums within that letter eg. A: Apple, Art People, Acorn, Ardvark

    Level Two:
    Track list

Example implementation #3 View Mode: Wall:Albums (Sort Album Artist) | List: Track

    Level One
Horizontal: Apple, Art People, Acorn, Ardvark
Vertical: Albums belong to the each album artist

    Level Two:

You could actually have "media wall" as a separate plugin to browse all media, this would mean it wouldn't be tied down to the constraints of the other view modes and you could give it custom animations and more flexability bc it's not tied down to the standard view modes. You could also just have 2-3 view modes per media type so you don't have to worry about having a user configurable view mode.

Developers, still waiting for your replies here. This way of navigating and filtering your content is _very_ elegant and VERY fast. It destroys the ancient way of presenting media that MP1 and MP2 use where you just need way too many button presses.

I like the idea very much but currently have no good idea how to implement this using standard xaml constructs. I already had problems with the TV guide layout, which is also a two-dimensional view (list of channels x list of programs).

A custom control type could be developed to achieve this result, but there I can't develop this (at least not in short term). If anyone is able to provide help in coding new xaml-controls, it is very appreciated!

    Thanks for the info mprpheus!

IMO. this would be a pretty compelling feature to have. And we certainly do need such when you see the gaps closing between MP and other Media Center applications. :)
