I have a Sony 50" LCD rear pro HDTV, and wanted to calibrate it using a calibration DVD i had borrowed. The calibration DVD asks you to turn up the brightness until you see an X. No matter how much i turned up the brightness i couldnt see the X, but when i switched to VGA it was there(and alot of other detail showed up). VGA is unfortunately not an option since i can only run in the native 1280x720 resolution over HDMI. The choice of DVD decoder doesnt affect the result, and the problem also occurs with black bitmaps on the desktop for example.

I recall TV's and computers disagree on what is black (due to differences in color space or something like that), causing 'crushed blacks' when a computer outputs directly to a TV. Im assuming the video card or driver needs to due to some color correction, but i have no idea how to do it.

Im using an ATI X550 video card with Catalyst 6.8 drivers.

I was wondering if anyone here had similar problems or knew a good place to look for information on this issue? Im unsure about whether i need new hardware, or just need to change some driver settings.

Im going to buy a new video card soon anyway(the X550 cant handle 1080i MPEG-2 deinterlacing), and i was wondering whether or not say the Nvidia 7600GT handles this automatically?
