Filetype support is set in the xvi config, remember this will only apply to 32bit applications like MP, so if your default player in windows is 64 bit, that will still use the DMO filter.
Do not think there is a 64 version of xvid, but as only recently updated to it myself cannot be sure.
BTW what are you outputting too, monitor or TV, my hdtv, has incredibly high contrast, maybe thats why traditionally quite dark viewed movies show up correctly for me, remember thinking these were to dark on my daughters monitor when she views them.
