Thanks theKiwi. That is exactly the right place to start. Good Job. I gues if we all add a comment in support of the initial message in the thread that will help.

    Cheers Mike

if we have to take it off site, i'm already an admin for and australasion based smf forum.

it's nothing fancy, but i can quite easily add a Media portal section with as many sub forums as needed.

Also i was wondering if anyone minds if i link their personal wiki's in my sig, as i've used most of yours (mcraenz) more than the community based MP wiki.

3.Totally support a separate forum for NZ MP users and I do support hosting it elsewhere but only if the Admins of this site won't give us our own sub forum here. i.e. why take it elsewhere? I just think it's better if the New Zealand community part of the community at large. (And on the same not I intend when I have time to bring all the stuff on my TV Server page at google back in to the NZ wiki.
you all speak english and all questions are about MediaPortal.

so i have to wonder which topics would require to create a seperate subforum (with even more subforums after some time ;) )

    Maybe someone can explain? :)

    Hi Chris,

Well from my perspective, the value is that the forum can then provide much more targeted assistance to region specific issues. In our case, we have quite limited satellite access and some of the technical issues we need to deal with are specific to NZ or Australia for that matter. Take EPG for instance. We just have no access to subscriber based EPG. So we have to find ways around that. Our suggestions would probably be of limited use to other MP users around the world. The same thing can apply to MP configuration for specifc NZ channels i.e. Prime which is not available on the Freeview platform but who's EPG is available on other transponders on the same bird!

I guess there would be many region specific MP issues applying to each region - not just the language. So, a Region section rather than a Language section seemed like a good way to (not only address), but to also target assistance, guidance and support.

    Cheers Mike

generaly speaking it is no problem to create such a "sub section".

but then we will run into a problem. information will get scattered even more in the forums.
because the "issues" which are posted in this section will not remain 100% NZ specific.
there will surely also be general tips and hints which should normaly be in the "main" forums so "all users" find it.

the more forums we add the more work we have to maintain read, answer, move the threads and posts.
we allready have "quite some" forums. ;)

a forum is also not very good in storing informations in a clear way.

i would suggest to add a "Region specific section" in the wiki where the users can add what they found out and how to get things working.
this should allready decrease the amount of "support threads".

what do you think about that? :)

Ok Chris, let's see what others think.

I appreciate your comments and the issues that can arise, but a wiki (as valuable as it is) is not really as practical as a forum where assistance can be provided on-line (as it where). I guess these region specific issues affect all users, so perhaps by creating a region specific section, the main forums could then be focussed on generic Media Portal issues whilst the Region forums would focus on regional configuration issues. So my preference would still be for a Region specific sub forum.

I really appreciate you giving this some thought though.

    Cheers Mike

i had a talk with the other admins.

Our opinion is that it is not wise to add subforums for countries (with even more subforums after some time).
    []simply because:[/u]
    • if we do it for one country we have to do it for "everyone"
    • informations get scattered even more
    • workload to monitor, moderate and maintain forum increases too much
    • forum gets too large, layout/structure becomes unclear (allready is very large)

we can have a country specific area in the wiki which then can be filled with all the informations you have.
for support the main forums can be used.

    :D
