Yay! some result with Core AVC!

I now have jerky/choppy picture and sound, both on BBC HD and ITV HD, but normal SD channels are decoding just fine (not affected by the Core AVC install as they had been previously)...

I can 'hear' my PC working overtime (CPU fan whirling like anything!) so I guess now I need some optimising tweaks to see if this improves the HD decoding, or really confirm a new GPU is needed...

Anyone know how to optimise Core AVC and the GeForce 6600LE? (Please?)

It's a PCI-E card, but I'll have a go at using rivatuner.

I'm looking for the cheapest card capable of processing the HD channels - will this £30 512MB Sapphire HD 2400 PRO work - anyone know?

Scan have HD3450 cards for less money, and HD4350 cards for only a few pounds more - both would be better buys than the 2400, but (AFIAK) none of them can do HQ Vector Adaptive deinterlacing for HD - you need at least a 2600, 3650, 4550 or 4650 for that.

However, Scan do have this - H260PRFS256DD-R - 256MB HiS HD 2600 PRO, PCI-E (x16), 1000MHz GDDR2, 600MHz GPU, 120 Cores,CrossFire, 2xDL DVI-I/ HDTV - Scan.co.uk - which seems a stunning bargain at just £23.....but I'd have read of this thread ATI Radeon HD 2X00 (2400,2600,2900) series owners thread - AVS Forum before jumping in to check up on it's h264 decode capabilites.

Unfortunately, those GPUs are PCI-E 2.0. My motherboard is only PCI-E 1.0 - I think...

What is HQ Vector Adaptive de-interlacing for HD, and do I really need it?

I will have a consideration of the linked 2600...

Thanks, but again, it's PCI-E 2.0. Unless, someone says my Abit AA8-Erd Eye has a PCI-E 2.0 slot, or that the v2.0 card will work with the v 1.0 interface, then it's no go for me... :(

'Vector Adaptive' is the highest-quality (HQ) de-interlacing mode that ATi support - it maintains full vertical picture resolution, whereas 'bob' de-interlacing reduces the vertical resolution. So you don't 'need' it, but the picture quality will be better with 1080i material - i.e. BBC HD - if the card can do it.

    Thanks Tony.

PCI Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yes they are compatible, the bus speed will be limited to 250mb\sec.

Sorry to keep pestering, but if the bus speed is reduced using a v1.0 PCI-E interface, then those v2.0 GPU cards won't be able to 'work at their best' - so no point spending more on them for my PC - is this right or is the higher bus speed not needed for HD processing..?

HD = 25mb\sec, so there is no problem, its just if you want the other features that the newer gpu chipset provides, which also are more likely to be supported by newer drivers, which nearly always break something on older gpu's :(

If there was a great price difference then stick to the 2600, but for another 20 quid, would go myself for the most currently supported card, at least its a bit more future proof.

But in the end its up to you :)
