Can Play DVD change res in MP? (1 Viewer)

My windows output res is 1360x768. My 16:9 plasma is native 1024x768 (rectangular pixels).

When I use MP to play a PAL DVD, I get the following:

DVD 576I converts to 1360x768 by FFDShow (using DVD Post processing), output via DVI (as 1360x768 is my windows res), plasma accepts 1360x768 and converts to 1024x768. This is 2 conversions.

What I would like...

DVD 576I to 1024x768 by FFDShow, MP to change output res when playing full screen DVD's (i.e. normally 1360x768 changes to 1024x768) so outputs native res straight to Plasma (1 conversion).

Is this possible with the current feature set? In doing the above would I expect to see an improvment in picture quality?

Not possible currently with MP. I would suggest that you would set the windows desktop resolution to match the plasma's native resolution so that the windows desktop picture (and MP GUI) would be looking better.

I can set 1024x768, i get 1:1 pixel mapping this way and picture is crystal clear except that the desktop is stretched. Equally running MP in 1024x768 looks OK initially when started (using wide skin), but then you notice the stretching in other places , for example the sun in the weather plugin.

If i change to 1360x768 everything is correctly spaced if ever so slightly less quality (as the plasma is converting 1360 to 1024 pixels). My DVDs looks ok full screen but I just feel that if MP have a different res when playing full screen I would get the best out of my set-up.

I would imagine this applies to most 1024x768 plasma owners (that is a quite a few panasonic and nec owners at least (I don't know much about other plasmas).

I am not asking for this feature, being a noob here and only using MP for a few days now I am sure there are hundreds of other worthwhile requests out there. Just my thoughts on display settings that is all... Ex

What about using the nativ resolution and "calibrate" the mp screen inside mp - this should be possible
    with the settings menu.
I am using a full hd rear projector tv with some optical overscan. Since my ATI driver does not allow me to scale it like my older nvidia did i did it this way. Leaving nativ resolution - calibrate mp skin.
I am not sure it this can fix your issue - just an idea.

If you set the desktop to 1024x768, you just have to set the Pixel Ratio to 1.33 in the Screen Calibration of MP. This will solve all your problems inside MP (Nothing should be stretched or out of proportion)

    Still not working but closer

I was not aware of the pixel ratio function, this makes sense, so gave it a try but bizarrely it is still slightly stretched horizontally, i notice this only when viewing my weather and the sun/moon is not round otherwise it is difficult to tell.

I have set res to 1024x768, pixel ratio to 1.33.

1024 x 1.33 = 1362 so should be ok. If i change res to 1360x768 with pixel ratio 1.00 it is not stretched and looks in proportion, i.e. no stretched moon.

Thought it maybe some widescreen setting on the tv, but there is no option for this on the DVI-D source.

Makes me think the pixel ratio function is not working correctly after all.

    Anyone any ideas?

You calibrate so the square looks - well - square!
AFAIK its using the regular MP GUI functions so everything being equal the rest of the UI should then look ok.

I have set res to 1024x768, pixel ratio

That is the native resolution of my TV for pc use, its crap, setting at 1280x768 and using the tv's widescreen view instead of pc view, everything looks in ratio, rounds are round not oval, and text is incredibly clear, even switching to HD720 is blurred in comparison.

I think you need to loose the technical approach and just go with what looks correct.

    Hi bigj,
That is what I checked, setting pxiel ratio to 1.33 then measured using a ruler against my plasma :) The square is square.

But when I look at the moon it is oval, this is what makes me think the problem is with media portal.

PD, I know you are right, but sometimes it has to be technically correct for it it to be truly accepted.

May be simply that the displaying of the sun/moon images does not use the defined pixel ratio.
