hi, ive got a problem with playing avi files, they just dont work no matter what. its not mediaportal specific, but its on my mediaportal machine, so thought i would ask for help on here.
machine was running great with mediaportal, the only codec it had was ffdshow and everything worked fine, including the exact avi files im trying to play now. i re-formatted the machine the other day and everything seemed to go smoothly, mediaportal is working good, tv is all good, 4tr etc. but it wont play these avi files. i can open them in mpc, but they wont play in mediaportal or wmp11. so i uninstalled ffdshow and tried saf codec pack, after reading about it on here. hasnt helped, which lead to another discovery that i cant even open these files in graphedit. so i have no idea what is going on. anyone?
the avi files arent corrupt, because as mentioned they open in mpc. i can also play them on my desktop pc that i am on now, which only has ffdshow and will run these avi files in wmp11. fyi, both machines run the same v-lited vista x64 install, so its not a windows update or something that has stuffed them up.
only thing i have left to try is different ati drivers, waiting for them to download now.

edit: got it sorted. was just some codec association issue.
completely removed all ati drivers and used Driver Cleaner program to make sure it was all gone. installed latest drivers but nothing improved. then i removed all visual c++ 2008 installs from my system and installed the recommended mediaportal x86 version, still broken. made sure all the direct-x runtimes were installed, still broken. tried to re-install wmp11 but this isnt possible. i remembered i manually installed the powerdvd9 codec, so i uninstalled it using DllRegSvr 1.1, still not fixed.
so lastly i thought i would run a codec fix program, used Codec Tweak Tool 4.8.4, it found many files were linked to a filter that no longer existed, so it deleted all the associations and now all good.
