Media Portal version: 1.16.0
MP-TVSeries version: 4.3.0.0
LAV Filters: 0.69.0
madVR: 0.91.8

Operating System: Windows 10 Enterprise N 64-bit (10.0, Build 15063) (15063.rs2_release.170317-1834)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K
Memory: 16384MB RAM
GPU: GTX 1070

I upgraded from 1.15 to 1.16, installed madVR and changed the Video Render to madVR in MP Configuration.

Videos (both h264 and h265) play fine in MovingPictures. Nothing plays in MP-TVSeries. What happens exactly is the video file appears to be opened/accessed, but the screen is black for about a second, then it goes back to MP and thinks that file/playback is complete. MP also will mark the file as "watched" even though nothing played. No error messages are shown. I tried changing the Video Renderer back to the others (VMR9 and EVR) to see if that would resolve the issue. Both VMR9 and EVR exhibit the same behavior.

Everything in the Codecs section is set to LAV and those settings have not been changed. [EDIT: See my follow up solution post. This was actually not the case]

I see that you have a comment that "MP-TVSeries needs to be updated to work with madVR" - but my MP-TVSeries is/was already the latest, so I'm not sure what this comment means. Is there an outstanding known issue that might be related?

Log for MP-TVSeries is below, but please direct me to any other logs you think are relevant and I can post those.

Thanks, and I just want to add that it's awesome that madVR is now supported in Media Portal.... so thanks for this work.

Please always use the provided MediaPortal Watchdog tool to collect full log files.
In this case you could do it as follows:
    1. Close MP.
    2. Configure MP to use EVR.
    3. Open the Watchdog tool.
    4. Select option 2 ("report a bug...").
    5. Click proceed.
    6. Reproduce the problem by "playing" a few videos in MP-TVSeries.
    7. Close MP.
    8. Attach ("upload a file") the zip file produced by the Watchdog tool.

I determined the issue. The problem is that if I select DXVA native decoding in LAV Video Config, the video doesn't play. I have known about this for a while now, but I didn't suspect it this time because

    a) All video files work in MovingPictures, but not MP-TVSeries.
    b) Previously, before 1.16, the screen would go black and stay black when using DXVA native. Now it goes black but returns to the menu immediately.

When I swap back to DXVA copy-back, it resumes working. I still don't really understand why (a) is the case with this config, but I suspect it has something to do with madVR and/or updates to MP (to 1.16) and the plugins (MP-TVSeries was already up to date upon installing 1.16 but not sure about MovingPictures). I say that because previously videos in MovingPictures would also go to black with DXVA native selected in LAV Video Config, but now, they work.

If you'd like to understand why DXVA native is not working, please use the Watchdog tool option 3 to export your system information.
We'll check your GPU capabilities etc.

The issue returned again, with DXVA copy-back not working. I think I had the wrong hardware device (i.e. display) selected; after switching the device it started working again. I exported logs from yesterday while I was having the issue.

After getting madVR setup I then tried DXVA native again. Magically, that worked. I then switched from madVR to VMR9, and now DXVA native works with that renderer too. Doesn't make sense to me, but OK.

I also have issues with CUVID, maybe I should post that in a new thread but the gist is that it drops large chunks of video frames and eventually the audio starts to drop out entirely. It almost gets to the point where the file doesn't even play anymore. This does not happen when I use Media Player Classic instead of MediaPortal's internal player (Windows Media Player?). With Media Player Classic I get perfectly smooth playback and no dropped frames or audio.

Well I have no idea what's causing the problem, but it returned again, and I cannot play any video anywhere.... with madVR. The internal Media Portal player (Windows Media Player?) seems to work, but madVR does not.

At the time, I was changing my video output settings in Nvidia and switched my TV to HDR. After that, everything stopped working.

    Hello again

First, MP doesn't use Windows Media Player at all. The internal player is just that: MediaPortal's internal player.

My understanding of madVR is that it's not necessarily an install-and-it-just-works thing. If you read the "what's new" page in the wiki you'll get the impression that there are known issues, required settings etc. You'll need to spend some time configuring both MediaPortal, madVR, and perhaps your GPU in order to get it working.
