This is a long thread, but just in case no one has mentioned it before, by default Windows sets SBE (timeshift files) as system files. For this reason, MP must run on an account with administrator priveliges.

To you gys with issues, can you confirm you are running as administrator and not power user or less?

I'm ONLY logging in as Administrator on the MediaPortal box, no other accounts exist (yet). To me, it's like a default policy to do so when trying to resolve issues with softwares like MediaPortal, your remark is valid indeed.

Did you try to change video and audio decoder for tv ?

I had the same problem with my "old" HVR-1300, the buttons were not enabled until I changed to another decoder (I don't remember which exactly)

I still cannot get this solved!

At my third plain Windows installation, I promised myself that I would not install windows again, but I'm considering to install a fifth installation once more now! I have tried all tips that can be found in this thread (login as Administrator, create a read-only file "live.tv" in card1 directory, disable virusscanner etc.), I have tried all avaialble decoders, I have re-scanned all channels. I have set to auto-start the TV when entering the 'My TV' section and every time it fails. I try every time to start the TV manually and it fails with the same annoying form (this form doesn't even display any message, only an "OK" button; how cynical). I try selecting a channel and again this nagging form. Every time, the option: 'Timeshifting' is grayed out in 'My TV'. I have put in a very considerable amount of time and effort into this software, only to find that I cannot use the most important part of it; I'm still not able to watch TV!! I try every time a different setting, but the behavior of MP in 'My TV' doesn't change at all!

But WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING????

I mean: why do you developers program an application that is very well able to scan all the channels in the MediaPortal SetUp tool (and display and play sound), but unable to display the channels in the main application???? GRRrrrr!

I will post my full MediaPortal log, where I start MediaPortal and only try once to start the TV in 'My TV' section.

    Please: HELP!!?

    Are you running Vista?
I am and had exactly the same problem - I've eventually found that I not only have to run it when logged on as an administrator but also use 'elevated privileges' (ie right click MediaPortal and select 'run as administrator'). I have not found out why for sure but there's clearly something that Media Portal does that needs admin privileges and on Vista, even running as admin, you don't have them(!). Vista normally pops up a dialog when it needs these privileges, but only for apps that understand it, otherwise it either gets silently ignored or 'virtualised'.

Incidentally, media portal stores all its settings in the main program directory structure which Vista just doesn't allow - it silently replaces the folders with virtual ones (actually stored in your logon profile area) which is a right pain. Nice idea but it screws too many apps up. In many cases it's just poor programming to use the program directories for user settings, but in MP it stores the central application settings/log files there so it is appropriate. MP configuration just needs to be modified to handle this (Not a priority I would expect as it does still work, but each user has a separate config/EPG etc).

Anyway, I've managed to set MP to always run 'as administrator' using the Compatibility settings which works OK but you have to have an admin password to run it if you are logged on as a 'normal' user (Which defeats the object).

If you are running XP there might be a similar issue but it would normally be more obvious (Try using regmon or filemon, if you can get a copy, to see if there are any failures), but if you are running as admin this is unlikely to be the case (Unlike Vista where you never 'actually' logon as an admin).

    Does that help at all?

Just read some other posts (including ones earlier in this thread) and the issue seems to be with SBE files which MS sets as system (so only accessible by admin with elevated privileges in Vista).

No real surprise that MS is making life difficult - Vista is an incredible pain to deal with with, even logged on as an admin. I'm very, VERY, close to wiping it and going back to XP. I'm going to try the MP TV server Beta first as I'm hoping the security issues should be resolved that way...

    @ ikerstges:
Have you tried to change the default recording path to d: (just try it).
    It solved my problem.

After that i have changed the path to d:\rec1 and d:\rec2

dont ask me why this works.. but it did for me

    [ERROR][6]: mpeg2:FAILED to set streambuffer filename:0x80004005

    Hi,

I had the same error after a crash of MP. I couldn't turn on TV and the Timeshifting button in the was grayed out.

I solved the problem by changing the recording folder in the configuration.

    HTH.
