Changing drive paths and Windows 7 Library support (Feature request?) (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone, hope you can help with my question


I find myself occasionally needing to re-arrange movie the location of my movies. It would be a much easier task if moving pictures supported Windows 7 libraries. That way I can just re-arrange the folders within the library, but MediaPortal wouldn't know the difference as it's still looking at the library itself. Is there any chance this could happen?


If not, is there an easy way to change drive paths/folder locations without Moving Pictures wanting to do a rescan of the files?

1. Open MovingPictures configuration screen.
2. Create Import path to your new location, be it different folder, drive or computer
3. Close down config
4. Move all your movies from the old path to the new one
5. Reopen MovingPictures configuration screen
6. Go to the Movie Details tab, and scroll down to notice all the movies marked with red color. These are your movies that have been updated with a new media location, which you can verify by changing from movie info to file info via the drop down selection.

Test it with one or two movies otherwise and once you are happy it works, do it for everything. I've moved hundreds of files over to different drives and it updated the location in a few seconds. The underlying system is based on a hash code generated from the file, so as long as you don't change the contents of the file, then it will be recognized and only path will be updated.

my first post: I tried the 6 steps and going back into movie manager I saw all the files in red but in the movie importer it seemed to be downloading all over again. So, I stopped that and deleted my old path and that seemed to take a long time and all my 1113 movies were cleared from the Movie Manager. I've used backup settings to restore everything but would be grateful for help to change the name of my folders. I also would like to be able to quit this Windows 7 installation and move everything to XP but I can't get the covers and backdrops to sync because of the difference between ProgramData on Win7 and where XP thinks these images should be. Thanks.

Did you try it with say 5 movies first? or moved all 1113 movies over at once? It does take a little bit of time of course to reflect changes to that many movies at once, and you can not do the move with MovingPictures running, because the move of files will go slower then MovingPictures detecting changes, in which case it will delete and re-add instead of update path.

The maximum amount of files I've moved between import paths at once has been roughly 500, but I've never had a problem and no information was redownloaded from the internet.

At least you had a backup, so just try again in smaller steps, verify it works and path is updated without downloading anything from the internet. Then you can mass-move the rest.

Thanks. I'll set up another Win7 machine on VMWare and try your suggestion. I also want to try the other way I found on this forum of using SQLite Expert to update local_media set. Have you tried it?
