Firstly, I've searched the forum for comskip and gone through every thread that seemed relevant to my problem, I've also done some googling to my issue, however I'm still none the wiser...

How do you get comskip to work? Sounds trivial I know, but I can't for the life of me get it to cut out adverts from my MP recordings... I've clearly missed out some obvious step in setting it up...

Hi Evis, comskip will not cut out adverts, it produces a txt file that tells the player where the ads are, by pressing the chapter forward button on your remote the player should skip forward. Check in your tv server setup that you have enabled comskip under plugins and configure it by ensuring you point it to your comskip folder, you'll have to download it from here http://www.kaashoek.com/comskip/files/

and i have mine running as the program is being recorded. Check to see if txt files are being made when you next record.

cheers

Seems very nice. Can comskip be enabled in the "classic" TV functionality, or just the server?

Might be time to go ahead and make the switch...

The Comskip support is a work in progress that is on hold due to the current feature freeze.

Heres what it does so far:

There's a plugin for TVE2 and for TVE3 that will run comskip after a recording (or during for TVE3) to create the Commercial timing file (.txt).

When playing back a recorded video file in the mediaportal front end if it has a corresponding .txt file then MediaPortal will load the chapter points and activate two context menu items (Next and Previous Chapter) which can be used to skip past commercials. You can set up a remote button or keyboard shortcut to activate these too.

    What it doesn't do (yet):

Automatic commercial skipping has been implemented and works 100% on my local copy. But due to the feature freeze it is not in. When the feature freeze is over I will make it configurable (you will either select manual or automatic commercial skipping).

    Timeline highlighting of commercial breaks.
Goes without saying, this would be nice to have. Haven't figured out how yet, but I haven't done any real gui programming in mediaportal yet so I'm still learning. Won't be difficult I'm sure.

    Realtime skipping inside timeshift.
I havn't even attempted this yet, but i think it will be possible. By piping the output of Comskip into the Tv Server plugin we should be able to stream the timeshift buffer with commercial positions embeded (somehow). This is a low priority however.

Before I can do realtime skipping in TVE3, I need to figure out how to stream the commercial positions over the tv server protocols, so that's gunna take a bit of mucking around. But should be doable.

So, give it a try, see how you go, and keep your eyes peeled for more developments in this area after the 0.2.3.0 goes final.

    Cheers,

Hey and-81. That's awesome news. I'm playing around with comskip to get it working well with Australian TV.

When you say "what it does so far", are you saying that the navigation via chapters reading from the .txt file is currently in 0.2.3.0RC1, or all of this that you talk of scheduled for 0.2.3.0 final?

Yes, navigation via chapters to skip commercials is in RC1, and I love it - it works great.

Thanks HEAPS for confirming this Seidelin. I confirmed that it works excellent with the chapter buttons from the MS MCE remote. How bloody neat!

I'd tried it yesterday, but it seemed somewhat random. Guess it was before my trials with comskip settings that was to blame.
