what about overlaying the folder.jpg with a padlock if the folder is protected?
using this solution makes a config option obsolete

^ wouldn't work, because auto generated folder image might contain nudity so you could still see some nudity underneath the padlock.

Just a though: Not sure if this is already the case but such a protected folder should be considered also by plugins and on a global level not only in videos. Like there should also never been backdrops shown from media in such a folder outside this folder, or if you show "newly added media", "random play",...

How about pin protected television channels/groups? Many people asked for this and in my opinion this is more needed then PIN protected folders. XBMC has got it also. Most pin protected videos/movies are protected in moving pictures pin access anyway.

If there is a global pin protection it should be optionally tied into certification ratings as well

If this was implemented you would have two options

    First toggle menu
[Only allow access to the following certifications when pin is locked / Prevent access to the following certifications when pin is locked]

    Second a list of certifications
    [ ] G, [ ] PG, [ ] R13, [ ] R18

Default would be prevent access to the following certifications, with no certifications ticked. ie. wouldn't prevent any access.

yes but i can't be bothered typing for all countries :) I thought about that and you can either

    1. Display all known cert codes
    2. Ask user to enter cert codes in a free text box with a seperator
    3. Scrape the current databases and list all the certs contained. (if a cert drops off the database, it should still stay in the list)
    4. Detect country code display certs for that country
    5. Drop down with country, then display certs for that country

I think the most robust + practical + intuitive method would be #4 augmented with data from #3.

You also need an option for uncertified content - restrict vs no restriction
