I also compiled MP2 yesterday and my thinking is that you shouldn't keep this to yourself much longer!
In order to gain interest and momentum from both users and developers a first alpha release is probably essential.
I can understand that you don't want to release something that is in a state that put off potential users but I would
say that won't be the case even if you release it right now. I have so far only tested the tv functionality, which
I guess have been one of the more problematic areas in MP1, but I currently have two HD channels running in PIP-
mode on the screen and, from what I can see and hear, it works flawlessly!
Sure, the PIP screen is much too small for my taste, there are some problems getting rid of on-screen menues
once they are brought up and I can't even guess how long it will take to reach feature parity with MP1 but still,
the PIP functionality in itself is enough of a killer feature to attract a bunch of users. Add a nice skin that utilises
the possibilities of MP2 and more will begin to migrate. Also, as MP1 and MP2 can be installed in parallell, there
is always the possibility for users to quickly revert if something goes sour in MP2, which is good as it takes off
a lot of the heat of keeping things stable during the process of reaching the first real "production" release of MP2.

Am I correct in guessing that the Team MediaPortal Facebook comment on the 26th Dec is relating to MP2 Alpha? If so, will it come with a TV server as well as the client side? Do you have an expected release date.... I have so many questions..... I am off to get my old scrap PC working so I can test it!!!! (goes off to work out how he can buy a new TV tuner for the test PC without the wife finding out....)

I bet you thought all the presents had been opened? Well there appears to be one more we have to pass out. Give us a few more days to wrap it and put a bow on it.

I wonder what it could be?

*tests the weight of the box*
    Feels like software....

    *shakes box and listens*
I don't hear a bunch of paper for a EULA so it must be open source...

*sniffs the box and inhales a big whiff*
Smells... new... VERY new actually. Even newer than "never released before"...

It seems you won a free licence(*) granted for life :p

About TV, there is currently no new TV Server. It will be developped later in the process, but it's definitely something that will be done.

However, there is a plugin named "Slim TV Client" that will allow you to use MP1 TV Server inside a MP2 client. Both MP1 and MP2 can be installed on the same computer, without any conflict.

We are very impatient to release this 1st Alpha of MediaPortal 2, and we are currently working to fix some issues we have inside the setup. So it should be a matter of days (exept if we discover a very major bug of course), but I can't tell any date as we still don't know.

It will be a surprise :D

    Cheers.

    Smeulf.

(*) As an open source project, MediaPortal 2 will be free for everyone of course...

    Fantastic!

    Thanks team!

Also, the fact that it can run on the same system as MP1 is really fantastic and will mean that many more people will be able to test it for you!

I don't need to buy that TV Tuner now for the test rig! :)

I know you are all busy (with family and work as well as MP2), so please don't put replying to my questions as high priority, but I was wondering.... Seeing that you are releasing the client MP2 Alpha with support from the MP1.2.X TV Server, is the general plan to work on developing the front-end to work with the old back-end and release that in a "good beta" state before moving on to releasing the MP2 TV Server?

I presume if you do this, you will be able to better able to track client side bugs and you will be able to get many more testers willing to try MP2 on their current systems without too high a risk of the wife getting annoyed.

Also, since the Wiki states that the client can be used with multiple TV Servers (which is great), will the client be able to work with one MP1.2.X TV Server (it might be 1.3 by then :D) and one MP2 TV Server? If this is possible, it will make it far easier for people to try to integrate the MP2 TV Server into a working 1.2.X server/client setup, again without risking too much service interruption for the rest of the family.

If the answer to the above questions is "yes" then I will start preparing my "old" TV Server with a new PSU and a cheap TV Tuner so that I can configure it with MP2 TV Server when you release the alpha (no pressure - I presume it is probably 6 months or more away from alpha release in any case, but I am eager to help with development by testing early).

    Thanks
