hey all,

I have a pc upstairs which i have hooked up to my tv downstairs via a 50' hdmi cable. The tv is hooked up as a 2nd monitor on my pc.

Question: Is there an application or plugin that will allow me to control mediaportal from my laptop?

Ideally, I'd like an application running on the laptop which sends keystrokes, as i type them, to mediaportal via tcp/ip. Like the laptop keyboard is acting as a remote control via tcp/ip. Mouse moves would be cool too but not necessary.

I've tried a couple of remote desktop software but there's always bugs. Microsoft Remote Desktop disables the 2nd monitor when I log in, forcing a restart to get it back. NetSupport Manager freezes mkv videos to a single frame whenever I log out of the pc. Have not tried UltraVNC yet.

I rather not have to resort to a bluetooth keyboard or other such workaround.

I took a quick peek at eventghost and girder, but i figure i'd ask here first.

thanks in advance.

I just tried UltraVNC and it seems to have the same problem as the other remote desktop software. Basically, if i log in and play a x264 mkv file and then quit VNC, the video on my tv will freeze but the audio would continue to play fine.

Has anyone tried Pocket PC Remote 0.2.2.0 on a laptop using the PcketPC emulator from microsoft?

I came across this: Synergy (Synergy). To quote from the site:

"Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s)."

I haven't used it though - no experience with it.

    And......we have a winner!
    Thanks chirontt!

Synergy works great. Took some fiddling, but it pretty much does what it says.
It's as if the laptop, the tv and the pc monitor are linked up as three interconnected monitors. How the monitors are "mapped" to each other are user configurable. I've set it so when mouse is moved on the laptop to the left of the screen, the mouse enters from the right of the tv and keystrokes and mouse moves are sent to the pc. If the mouse is then moved back to the right, it reappears on the laptop. Haven't done alot of testing to see how fragile the connection is but nevertheless it's pretty slick.

Only gripe is there's no easy way to start and stop the application, so VNC will still need to be used to establish the initial connection.

    Great find, chirontt
