This then begs the queson, should I replace the ATI HD5550 in my main HTPC and put an nVidia card in there... certainly it would overcome the CCC driver issues

Only if your feeling rich, mine has to be broken before my Mrs lets me spend money ;)

Thanks for the detail Ben and great point re the ads. I just edited my previous post and have come to the same conclusion as you have on bit rate for h.264 conversion.

I would like to remove the ads from .ts files, but I find it a bit of a faff to be honest - I gave it a go around 18 months back. If it could reliably be done automatically then I would do it. Although the GF just finds it easier to skip forward 3 or 4 mins.

Glad to know i was fairly close! It's a fair point on the faff. I get bored doing the editing sometimes. I haven't found a reliable ad finder yet either. comskip seems ok-ish with the logo detection but different channels seem to fade out and in in different ways, almost as if it were designed to fool comskip.
BTW I have an ATI as well. What CCC driver issues haev you had?
    Cheers

I did a clean install a couple of months back and downloaded the 11.9 drivers - I got loads of pixelation on the HD channels. I eventually reverted back to 10.4 after trying a couple of other earlier releases, and it seems pretty stable now. The 11.9 gave me cause for concern as I had just gone onto a RAM drive for timeshifting and I thought it was that giving the pixelation problems. Sometimes still get it on the BBC HD channels, but it is quite rare now.

Lesson learned - Only upgrade one bit of kit at a time!

Well, if I get an awkward client I put a bit more on his bill to make up for the trouble/attitude and use it for bonus goods like new video cards!

I use videoredo for my ts files. that is to remove the adverts. but removing adverts is also quite an effective way of cutting file size too!

Same here, just put finished mpeg file into mkv container once done.

Here's my comskip.ini from MCEBudy which is a bit more tuned than the supplied one for the UK

    Heh.
I've had some playback issues on HD (mainly bluray rips). Recently i discovered that there is a test version of the lav video decoder that uses dxva2. There is also a test rebuild of the codec selection tab in the configuration app that allows selection of codec for divx and vc-1 files as well as the usual mp2 and h264.
i now have lav video decoder selected for all video types (just like all those nvidia folks) and it is running really well. haven't tried it with the tv codecs yet though. i say all this because my ad-10 is quite new so i have never had any older drivers for it and with lav video decoder + dxva2 everything seems great without the need for any older drivers. ffdshow dxva never seemed quite right a lot of the time, just a bit of stuttering and a bit of blurring, hard to pin down exactly. pdvd never worked on some blurays (specifically vc-1), although during this process i also discovered that that has been fixed with a test version of saf 6.06.
if you want to try playing with the test versions i will point you in the right direction. i assume all of it will reach full versions at some point though.
    Ben
