Copy recordings to WHS server? (1 Viewer)

I have a WHS network where the WHS server is the main storage repository for all my videos, recordings, pictures etc. But my HTPC is a different machine, where I have MediaPortal TV Server installed. There is not a huge amount of space available on this machine.
Is it possible somehow, to move TV recordings from the MediaPortal TV server to my WHS server automatically and subsequently view them from there using MediaPortal?
I used to use Windoze MCE that worked like that, but can't see how to do it with MediaPortal.
Alternatively, is it possible to record directly over the network to my WHS server? I have a Gigabyte network but I am not sure if the quality will be OK doing it this way.

Hi.
To view those moved recordings is no problem as they are .ts files which can be played back with MyVideos plugin as well as with MovingPictures, TVSeries,... You just add the folder you move the files to to video folders (import path of TVseries, Moving Pictures,...)

Automatically move those files are maybe possible by the TV Management plugin. It's quite new and I didn't have tested it at all, but I think this is exactly written for such cases.

Blobby - Just curious, what was the reason for having separate HTPC and WHS boxes? I'm running WHS 2011 and have the MediaPortal TV server installed/running on it. Granted it was a bit of work to get everything running but it's nice having everything on one machine.

Well tomma123, that's a good question.
The thing is my WHS machine is headless and sits in my loft with half a dozen external USB drives in a rotating backup system, whirring away nicely and doing it's stuff.
My cable feed, HTPC and flat screen TV are all of course in my lounge. So it's the only place to have MP really.

I'm just wondering whether this system is powerful enough to record straight over the network to my WHS recordedTV folder.
I guess I'll just have to try it. Maybe I'll update this thread when I have some results either way.

I tried to record to my whs over gblan once. I had serious dropped frames and stuff like that so I just switched back to local. Now my disc in the htpc is getting full so I would be interested in that solution again. Could you pleas post your experiences with that?

One disadvantage of recording to the whs would be that it has to be online every time you do a recording...

The server will most likely be on anyway. If the server is the media repository then it needs to wake whenever the HTPC wakes.

I have WHSv1 and I use it as my TV server, it is running For The Record and does a fairly good job.
I have discovered that I cant record or time shift to a standard share (on a pooled disk), Drive Extender starts working and things start glitching. I instead use a dedicated disk (was an internal, now USB2) to time shift and record to and everything is fine.

I cant see any reason you shouldn't be able to record straight to a shared folder on WHS over the network. In theory, your network should be plenty fast enough.

Then again, I'm no expert.

Not necessarily. With wolpowermanager you can wake it on mp-startup and/or on entering any kind of plugin. So right now for me the whs will stay asleep while recording and only resume when needed. But: As soon as my hdd in the htpc will be running out of space I won't care about energie saving as I have a lot of space on the whs...

That is what I assumed. It didn't work flawless on first attempt. But I didn't try to figure out what went wrong, just switched back to local drive... So I think it's worth another shot. Do you know if I have to re-install 4tr to get the network stuff working? I remember some options in the installer...

If you are asking , "can I change the target directories for record and time shift?". With Argus recorder Tuner definitely, for MediaPortal TV Server I assume so.

For Argus, the settings are in the Argus Recorder/Tuner Management Console. You might have to restart the services(or PC) for the changes to take effect.

Edit: If you have WHSv1, don't record to a share in the drive pool. it'll only give you trouble.
