Which CATALYST drivers are you using. I prefer CATS 6.5 with the older Radeon spec cards .

I have seen primary overlay allocation problemswith 6.6-6.8 on some early Radeon cards.

Try reinstalling the latest directx .

Are all the chipset drivers installed espeacialy AGP if needed.

As your card is not all dx9 you will see some higher cpu usage with the MP GUI, I would expect 40-60% to be max with your cpu though.

    Agreed with SciDoctor

Mine runs at between 5-20% CPU use recording with 2 cards, may at a push hit 30% but no more.
Is this a clean install of XP, ie format/install without all unecessary bells and whistles, ie Cyberlink, WinDVD, Xvid, Divx, Tv software, even ffdshow at a push are ok, if you install other mediaplayer codecs, they may cause you a problem.

Remember just reinstalling XP leaves all the old files on your system, so if you have had any problems in the past they are still there, just look in your program directory to see how much is left from a previous install.

    Hi,

Not consciously. ;-) I am afraid I don't know what that means. Can you explain?

Do you have more than one display connected to your graphics card? Eg. LCD to the VGA port and a TV to the S-Video port. Running MP on the TV (secondary display) would lead to high CPU usage....

    Anything in the log files?
    You can attach them here....

No, just one display. Reinstalling 6.5 catalyst drivers didn't help.

    Log attached.

Upgrading to a Radeon 9550 card solved it. I am now down under 5% idling.

    Thanks to everyone for suggestions!
