I can upgrade to several Core i5s without changing motherboards. But I take the point - i3 to i5 not a major difference. Thanks both AF and Lehmden for your perspectives.
I am VERY well aware of the advantages of an SSD -- which I have had in my personal desk machine for quite a while. Which is why this thread was about CPU upgrades.
I have made sure that my HD is fully powered up and spinning at full speed before trying to start a playback - so I'm sure that is not the problem. As stated, the longest delay is after a reboot, so I'm guessing that MP has some 'housekeeping' to do before starting the first playback ---
