Fooled around with some different solutions, tried uninstalling all codecs, etc. Then at some point, I realized that the configurater still ran although I got the message about the crash. It failed at the end,  didn't save any channels, but I was allowed to start Media Portal after that. Shut down MP, ran the setup again, and this time it worked.
