The problem on the desktop went away with the new video card, so no problem now, but with the old ATI card installed, I ran DXdiag, and it says I was running DirectX 9.0c, and all the spinning cubes and stuff worked, so I thought it was therefore compliant?

Unfortunately thats a software test, not a hardware one, lulls people into thinking there graphics will do the job
