Difference on 8 or 16mb cache HDD? (1 Viewer)

Not sure if anyone has done any testing, but is there a notable difference in 8 or 16mb cache on HDD's. Say for instance it is around 300gb or more and it would be just about full, mainly with hdtv recordings?
Think it would be worth paying the extra?

I have both 8 & 16mb caches on my HD's and to be honest, notice no difference between them.

I have read some of the write ups about this, and even they say that there is really nothing to make one superior to the other.

Caching is much better done on the CPU side as it has a lot more information about what it needs and how to organise it. Some hard drive cache is better than none, but you won't see a big difference between 8MB and 16MB. That said, whenever I look in my area there is no difference between 8MB/16MB cache price wise, a store tends to only stock one or the other. Even going back to when both were on the market in the same store, I don't remember the price difference being more than a couple of dollars.

I was thinking about getting the 400Gb (8mb) Samsung or the Seagate 400gb (16mb). Just that the Samsung is a good price, and you will see the price difference and will then know what I am on about....Stonebridge

I think the price difference is more to do with the brand names involved.
Seagate is a much better name as far as drives go so they charge more.

Personally, I only ever buy Seagate, they have a much better warantee than any other and when the drives get as much hard use as timeshifting gives them then a good warantee is very worthwhile.

here are a few links... take it how you want. It depends on the job/task. I have a mixed mode, SATA 10K Raptors on Raid0, 16mb cache PATA, and 16mb cache SATA. I feel that my 16mb cache drives perform well when dealing with large files... but here some ligh reading....
