Honestly I would have bought the firedtv if they would not have been that expensive. Now I'm running 3 Hauppage Nova S2 cards in my server and (knock on wood) they work without problems. I bought 3 Golfs instead of the Mercedes but if the pricing would have been in the range of a midrange product then I'd have choosen the slightly more expensive one.

Very much good, especially small and innovating companies stop existing cause of a stupid criminal crowd called Bankmanager, Investmentbanker and other pieces of shit in that dirty business and the f**king politicians all around the western world, that have not been able to control these a**holes. I hate the fact, that these gangsters in their shiny suits continue with their criminal behaviour. Time to stop these villains --- regardless the method to stop them. Enough is enough.

I know this is hard speech, but time to be friendly is over.

Yup it is quite harsh words but nevertheless true!

And after such a sad message the frustration is fully understandable.

I dare to say, that as soon as you needed a CI, there was no real alternative to the floppy-dtv.
If you can life without it, then the Nova-HD-S2 is a nice card (at least after the 3rd drivers generation, initial drivers were horror. ;) ), i have one here as well.

Very sad news... but i hope Terratec cinergy C DVB-C card will be now first choice and more supported in Mediaportal ;)
As i stated in the first post, we had an extremelly nice contact with Digital Everywhere.
If there were issues, i've opened Live Messenger, spoke with them and in no time we had a solution up and running.
Thats something you can only dream about with other companies, where you have most of the time no direct contact person, just some crappy "support" mail where you receive rubbish answeres after months and no detailed information.

Support was one of the strongest parts of DE. Not only for their customers, but also for us.

InfinityLoop: Do you know if they intend to opensource their Windows drivers? Because with the coming of Windows 7, current beta driver would not be stable enough.
    I dont know.

Marco is still discussion possibilities with other companies to keep floppy and firedtv on the market.
If these fail, then it would be nice if he opensources the drivers and firmware. But i do not know.

Very sad news for us all indeed.

But not only the bankers and the crisis is to blame. The whole HTPC-market has nearly vanished in the last month. Why?

    - Potential customers are confused about the different standards announced by provider and TV-companies
    - People try to save their money, not willing to spent it in expensive entertainment with an uncertain future
    - Another big part goes to our "friends" of the press. There are only a few journalists, who understand that a HTPC is not a PC anymore.
    - The endless "Vista is rubbish" dicussions and the waiting for Windows 7
    - New products, like T-home etc. for low price, with low features but big marketing and big companies behind
    - Last but not least, the so called "specialists*", who sell complete HTPC. I came across some of that PCs and just wondered. One think I learned, one unsatisfied customer talks with a hundert others, a satisfied customer, maybe with two or three.

And who pays the bills of that? Small company, specialists like DE

The community here and communities with the same interests, like MCE etc. are not strong enough, to keep such companies alive. Sad but true.

*(pls notice, no one from the forum here is meant)

Especially the DRM lock down that is looming in the future could be a killing strike. It might end the pay channels for open source based HTPCs completely.

My cable company has already taken the nice step towards dancing with the movie / content provider companies. In their great wisdom they have decided to start to use CAM pairing with SD channels as well (which is not even required by the content providers, as only the "premium" HD content should be protected). This will render CAM + PC combination useless as no PC is going to be found on the approved settop box list. Sad, but nothing we can do about. Similar lockdown is most likely going to start happening with the DVB-S side as well.

I didn't want to go in further details above. But you're absolutly right.

    You are fully right.
This will definetly come in the future.
Look at the upcoming HD+ of Astra. All HD content send via Astra will be protected by it and you have to pay a monthly fee if you want to receive it. Additionally they will encrypt the content by a propritary system called CI-Plus which will only be available for certified receivers. Best of all: the system includes the possibility to control how the content is used by the provider. Recordings can be disabled at all, skipping of commercials can be disabled, and the maximum timeshift time offset can be defined (lets say 30 minutes). Additionally recordings can be deleted from the harddisk at any time by the provider or a exipiration date can be set.

This is a nice example how to make Pay-TV out of Free-TV.

The European Union is currently investigating the plans of Astra.

If this comes true they all can view their shit themselves.

    That's very bad news!

They have definitely the best TV Card product! I really hope they find a solution to keep their products in the market.

As Koschel already mentioned, it looks like the HTPC has a very bad future. Especially with CI+

I'm not shure what will happen but i think a lot of htpc users would not like to miss their features and so they will start to do illegal things with CAMS / Softcams and stuff like that - but it is forced by the providers.
