Hi all,

a general question about sound and more precicely digital out. At the moment i am using an onboard sound card and SPDIF out. When using SPDIF does the sound card in question actually have any bearing on the sound quality ? ie. if i am outputing to a 7.1 receiver over optical, does the sound card also need to be 7.1 or not ?

I hope that my question makes sense to someone, basically i want to know if putting an X-Fi card in the system will actually make any difference when using digital out.

All the best,

Mark

Digital out bypasses the soundcard completely so the quality of the card (minus the quality of the connectors) would have no bearing at all. So no, dont waste your money.

Anything but dolby digital material will appear to the receiver as stereo and DD is only encoded in 5.1 so 2 of the extra channels wont work (or will be upmixed).
