    Hi guys,
I would like to add a second system to my network and I was looking around for a remote.
Currently I'm still using xp but might switch to windows 7 in the near future.
On the other hand, I installed MP on the laptop with vista of a friend who is using it mainly for music & pictures and I am also looking for a remote for her.
In the documentation/hardware selection help, there are a few MCE remotes reviewed but those seem to be hard to get these days.

Can anyone enlighten me whether any MCE remote would work with MP?
I just found this one: ALTERNATE. Hardware - Software - Entertainment which only seems to work with vista home premium or vista ultimate.

Any thoughts about using it with xp and/or windows 7?

Thanks a lot for reading and replying!
    P.

    Hi Peter

That's labelled up as a XP mce 2005 remote, so should work on all the Window versions, strangely that looks like the Vista model 5100 which was also marketed within Europe, but had 4 in 1 capability as a learning remote, so I'm not totally sure which model number remote you are getting, but as the receiver is xp mce certified, then it should work whichever OS you have.

    Merry Christmas

I use the cheapest MCE Remote from PCTV of type RC6. It is perfectly recognized by MP under XP and 7. However you need to customize the Back button in COnfigurqtion of MP to get back to previous played channel. If you do have an azerty keyboard then you need to load NUMLOCKER to get CAPSLOCK on all time (other solution is to set US keyboard as default). This will allow you to change channel directly from the number key press on the remote.
Under 7 remote installs PnP. Under XP (non MCE) you have to force the eHome (microsoft) driver.

I'am dam sure if you would find this rc in a shop with its retail package you are going to notice a "Windows Vista" compatibility label on it. In this case it is nearly impossible to get it running under XP.

Hi Ray thank you for your quick response.
In the link that I added nothing was mentioned regarding OS versions it would work on but I found another site which stated vista.

DjeC64: can you get that one separately without a tv card? I thought PCTV was a brand that primarily sells tv cards or am I wrong.

kiwijunglist: strange that it works under xp but is branded as a vista compatible remote... Thank you for pointing it out because I had not seen this one yet.

Finding a remote is a real issue and it's strange that, even media centers are getting more widespread, it's not getting easier to find one.

Is it always a guess (or of course asking over here) which one would function with the used OS/MP?

EDIT: should all vista remotes work with 7?
EDIT2: when it's branded as a MCE remote, does it always work with MP?

    Hi Peter

If it is labelled as MCE and comes with a usb receiver, then it will use the standard ehome driver, which will work with MP.

Hopefully will get my own pc out of storage, so I can get the internet links on how to get a Vista MCE remote working with all windows OS's (XP\Vista\Windows7)

    Bye

Ah ok, so MCE implies it has an usb receiver?!?
And on the other hand, it seems that it's possible to get a Vista remote also working under xp as well....

I guess Vista compatible/ready would not be a problem for Windows 7, right?

On the other hand: is it right to conclude that ANY usb remote should work with MP?
