Synopsis::

Movies, either from the CD drive or saved, are not playing in 5.1 sound. The sould appears to be 2 channel. I've testing the sound card using its utility and it apprears to be working correctly. Just when I play through MP.
The opitcal out from HTPC is running through a Sony Dolby Digital DTS STR--DE835 receiver. The receiver is receiveing DD, just not putting it out. I'm sure it's not the receiver, DVD player's DD is functioning correctly. CDs ran through MP sound great. Just movies are not comming through id DD.

I'm kinda having a stab in the dark here as i currently dont' have my PC connected to my amp, but i have a feeling it may be either of these 2 options you may need to do .
In your sound settings in say control panel there will more than likely be some kind of an option that says what to output, most audio cards default to just plan audio output from the outputs ont he back of the card or onboard, mostly there is an option to say tick a box that says output Digital and Analog signals or another option to output Digital only from the Optical out.

Second option may be needed is that you may have to get a AC3 filter installed on your computer, if you do a search on google for AC3Filter it will come up and you just install it and it may solve your problem.

Sorry for the messy reply , but at a guess i would say you just need to make sure that your audio card is outputting Digital out of the optical instead of Analog by default.
Hope that helps

Yep, try the AC3 filter for DVD playback.

Also in the Media Portal Setup check the settings for the codecs that you are using, you may find that they are set to stereo or may only be stereo compatible, in which case try a different codec.

Yep i had the same problem too. but when i got the videos to work in surround when playing ISO(changing setting in FFDshow), the sound for musice wound sample realy bad. then when i switch back the DVD were in DD stereo only. i did do a qiuck fix by use PowerDVD as external player.

You have to make sure all your settings(in Mediaprotal setup) are checked for S/PDIF. open up the decoder filters "tab"

Mind you the easy way is to get 'NVidia PureVideo' Dcoder and check the speaker setup to "External Receiver - SPDIF" and this work great now all channel are fine. This is by coxal to a Onkyo receiver for me

    I had a two-day-fight last week to get AC3/DTS going with my HTPC and my Amp...

    First: What do you want to play? DVDs or AVIs with AC3/DTS. DVDs should be pretty easy. As already said here, check all Codec-Settings to be on direct SPDIF-Output.

    If wanna play avis with AC3/DTS, its quite harder.
    Here are my conclusions from my fight:

    1. Remove FFDSHOW and AC3Filter.
    2. Install Graphedit.
    3. Install AVI<->AC3/DTS-Filter (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84797)
    4. Right-Click on AVI-File and open with Graphedit. Look which Audio is connected with File. Should be the installed AVI-AC3/DTS-Filter. If not, mostly its the fault of Nero being installed. It overrides every merits (at least for me). Uninstall or unregister Nero or Nero-Codecs then.
    5. Set Codec-Settings to SPDIF-Passthrough.
    6. Hopefully it works now.

    Hope, I helped you guys a bit. With this config, it works great for me.

    Hello,

    what I have to do to get DolbyDigital sound on the analog Outs on my 5.1 soundcard usind a DVB-T usb Stick or a DVB-S card?

    For DVDs I use WIN-DVD with 5.1 output.

    Jes, I know, I have to decode AC3 into analog for the Outputs!

    All I want to know is if MP will give out AC3 from TV over the analog 5.1 outs by using a decoder and how to do it!

    i've found that Digital TV only puts out stereo or pro logic Dolby Digital( mind u i live in Australia so that is all i can coment on).
    so there for your sound will be 2.1. but if you get the odd pro logic program it will still be mainly the 2 front speakers as the rear speakers are just sampled from the front to make a simulated surround sound.

    heres how to set AC3 to 5.1
    open setup for MP and goto
    'decoder filters' "tab" then
    'MPEG/AC3/DTS/LPCM Audio decoder' "tab" now change AC3 decoder speaker setting to "3 front + 2 rear". now just go thought the other filters make sure speaker configs are all set to 5.1.

    make sure you have selected 'MPEG/AC3/DTS/LPCM Audio decoder' for TV audio decoder setting on the Televison tab

    Thank you!

    Another question: When there is no 5.1 sound on the chanel, do I hear 2.1 or 2.0?

    I have the a analog card and (then) a DVB-T stick. Can I configure the system that the analog card is in stereo and the DVB-T stick is in 5.1? The speakersetup is then always in 5.1!

    Is there a funktion to switch easy from stereo 2 chael into 5.1 AC3?
