Hello colleagues

I was just thinking about buying a new CPU for my media center.
Now I've seen that Intel is selling a new double core CPU for less then 150 Euro.

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 805

It's not much of processing Power (2666 MHz) but dualcore and cheap.

So my question is how much does Media Portal benefit from a double core CPU? Is it worth to focus on buying one?
Or doesn't media portal support and doesn't get any boost from this?

i doubt MP has been coded as multi-threaded.
that is, it will not see any improvement from dual core.

but what you could do is assign the OS to one core and mediaportal.exe exclusive access to ther other core...that way, MP can do what it wants when it wants.

a 2.8 ghz Pentium D should be great for what you need...it will even play high definition without a worry

While media portal might not be multithreaded I do believe some of its "support" utilities are. I think there is a mulithreaded version of xvid and dvix out there. I also think there is some multithreaded versions of lame and other codecs out there.

I use my MP box to encode xvid videos and rip cd's at the same time I use it for a MP box. I bet that a dual core CPU would come in handy for that.

I see no downside to using a dualcore for your box even if MP doesn't support it.

Funny this morning looking at exact same processor on ebuyer, from what i have managed to find out, 1. you need a motherboard costing the same price to get the benefits. 2. it does not support hyperthreading technology.
the reviews i have read, still say the amd x2 beats it hands down.
So dissappointed got to keep saving those pennys to pay for the one i want.

I thought Hyper-Threading doesn't really matter on dual core CPU since this technology is just trying to emulate a double core by splitting up some processes. But i'm not really sure about this.

Regarding the motherboards I have to check first, since normally i'm not a fan of Intel CPUs.

But due to the problems csberto mentioned...I really have to think about the whole double core.
