my main point was - the spec of your machine should be fine for HD, see my spec in system info, i have a much older machine and I have HD TV and Blu-Ray all playing fine.

I still get some channels breaking up or skipping a little - but that is due to codecs not handling poor signal very well (never have issues with blu-ray or non-tv content)

    ignore everything i've said!!!

That's great news if the CPU is running at less than 5%, it means the GPU is running in full dxva bitstream mode. Have you checked all graphics drivers are up to date?

From the EVR log I can see the dropped frames - what refresh rate is your TV using? Can it accept 50hz (ie 1080p50)? You will get stuttering/dropped frames at any other refresh rate.

Have you tried DShowHelper from OwlsRoost? This has helped for a lot of people

    Hi.

There are numerous things that affect playback quality(stutter, tearing, corrupted frames). Also when talking about HD we must separate interleaved and progressive source material. 1080i is much power hungry than 1080p.

Let me give you a link to MePo guide:

    Stuttering Playback - MediaPortal Wiki

It should give some hints where to start looking.

Funnily enough I had been trying the various new dshowhelper dlls.

At lunch I swapped back to the default 1.1.2 one, and I've had a HD channel playing ever since.

Currently it has done done 348,000 frames and only dropped 216. Which I think is a vast improvement to how it was before... Interesting!
