DVD Audio Issues (1 Viewer)

Right been examining the files that will / wont play the audio correctly, using Mediainfo and find the following:-


Camcorder files (JVC MV HD Cam) have stuttering Audio has Audio Codec of mpeg-1 audio layer 2
Hired DVD Disk has stuttering audio and has Audio Codec AC3
DVD Rips with AC3 Audio Codec have audio stutter

Dont ask why but some rips are reported with a blank against the audio codec and these play faultlessly.

ANy thoughts on what I need to install/configure to resolve ?

I have installed filmerit and removed the reported iffy ones and now showing all as fine.

Possibly a very silly thing but...

Under MediaPortal Configuration, which decoder does it say it's using to decode the audio on DVDs?
Which decoder does it say it's using to decode the audio on video files/movies?

I had issues where the default Audio Decoder made horrible noises, changing it to a different one worked =)

I have left that item as the default as its all new to me !

I have attached screen dump of the options available.

One other point is that I installed and set up (!!!) AC3 filter as I thought that this might help the files reported as AC3 but it didnt ! Also it buggered up the sound on the files shot with the JVC digicam so I have removed it.

Can anyone explian (in simple terms) what AC3 does and how / why it does it ? In fact similar for FFDshow as all I see is suggestions to use both

I found that the following guide proved very useful for setting up the codecs on my system;
MEDIAPORTAL - free MediaCenter HTPC Software - simple mediaportal codec guide

From the screenshot I'd say try either of the Cyberlink ones or the DScaler decoder =)

Possibly not the best method, trial and error, but has worked for me =P

Almost there... changed to dscale as u suggested rebooted went into settings in mp home window and changed the audio decoder setting in this window to dscale again (kinda thought that if you changed it in config utility that it would not need re entering again ??)... and tried a dvd burnt to the drive (kids shrek) soundtrack/effect audio is great but the vocals are way way faint. and now when i try and play dvd via the dvd drive the audio is still choppy

Also since i changed to scale some avis wont even play via MP ! See attached pics for mediainfo report on file (Ben 10 AVI) !!

Also for shreck which calls for AC3 which i dont have installed as it then will not play my JVC hddcam files on which are fine at present. Mind you I seem to just install it as default and hope it sorts itself out in MP and with FDDShow maybe thats the prob ? Clutching at straws now

Also info for file on disk in dvd drive again AC3 .....?

One thing I've noticed, if the Vocals sound faint when the character is in the middle of the screen (most of the time) then it's normally because it's set to 5.1 and i'm losing the centre channel somewhere!

I followed the guide posted about and I'm having no issues with using ffdshow decoder. It's a chance I'm totally wrong, but seeing as no one else was giving any help I thought I'd try with what I know!

LIl Pete your a star anything is worth a punt im that hacked off with it at the mo.

I have got the guide you suggest but I noticed that it states that DVD codecs are not covered or " install your own " (not a direct quote but similar.

Do you use sdpif out for audio and do you use AC3 at all ??

Its a lonely old world with audio probs in MP so please keep me going with this

sorry omitted to add that when vocals are faint that is all and through out the film. they are sooo faint that in order to hear them you have to have the amp so loud that any sound effects nearly bring the house down

really? According to MediaPortal Configuration I'm using the ffdshow Audio and Video decoders, which i installed following the instructions in the guide, to decode the DVD and it's been working fine!

I don't use SPDIF if it means what I think it does. My speakers are analogue (ie 3 jacks in the back of the pc).

According to (Dolby Digital - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) AC3 is a common format for sound to be in on DVDs, so I'm guessing I do use it and that the ffdshow decoder handles it!

well` i have bitten the bullet and removed anything i have installed associated with audio/video/media portal back to xp and then followed the guide and reinstalled/configured each - hey presto almost there everyting fine save for playing dvd disks from the drive which still have the stutter albeit not as bad !!!

Which ever disk i try has the same issues and they all have AC3 as audio codec according to media info.

Im loathed just to bang AC3 back on just yet as i think that it was caused most problems with audio on other video play back previously.

Will look around for AC3/MP config advice over the weekend and maybe have a go......will keep ya posted
