Ok, I have one major gripe before I am totally happy with my HTPC setup. I should add that I don't think this problem is a MP issue!

I need some help in tracking down why my DVD drive freezes after 3-4 seconds playing a DVD (I am using it with CSSRegionFree), but I have tried both region 1 and 2 discs and uninstalled CSS...

Initially I thought it was an MP (0.2.0.2) problem as the screen would just go black. I have tried both WinDVD and WMP and both freeze. In fact WinDVD won't even load properly any more. When I try to kill the applications it takes 4 or 5 attempts to close it. dumprep.exe appears every time and takes all the system resources, hence the lockup.

Yet, when I use WMP or play an audio CD or software CD, it works perfectly.

I have reinstalled windows and reloaded the codecs. Is it a hardware or codec issue? The only codecs that I have loaded are GPL MPEG2, DScaler and DivX & ffdshow

I know this forum is MP, but I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give as I'm currently stuffed from watching movies.

Thanks!
BTW, I am able to play mpeg and Divx files fine from My Videos & My TV (DVR-MS files)

Check if UDMA mode is enabled and operational on your optical drive...

First check in the Bios, and then in the Windows device manager...(under IDE channels)

If windvd won't load or is corrupt then dvd's will not play anyway, as this is your dvd software. that's were i would look for the answer.
CSSRegionFree is just a software hack to be able to read all dvd's, not actually playing software, that's as far as i know, please correct if wrong.

Hmm, I still can't get this damn DVD drive to function properly.

Reinstalled WinDVD and now I get the studio logo from discs playing, including WMP and MP, then a freeze. I have disabled the error reporting to stop the CPU bottleneck.

I have no idea why this suddenly started. I have tried all versions of 0.2.0 including the patches. Now MP will not hibernate properly on a clean install of 0.2.0 and I don't know what to do, apart from reinstalling everything from scratch AGAIN!

It appears that the earlier suggestion of UDMA is selected from Windows. Can't find the option in the BIOS. Then again, nothing has been changed, apart from installing a new Tuner Card.

Could it have something to do with IRQ or DMA access, although I know nothing about this, except it can cause hardware conflicts...
