I have begun the project of putting all of my DVDs onto my media server. Before I get too far into the project, I am trying to find out if there is a backup format that will allow me to compress my DVDs, keep the menu structure, and then have mediaportal support the menus and playback just like the DVD was in the drive (preferably through the moving pictures plugin).
I realize I could just copy the DVD straight to the server, but hard drive space isn't free and I am currently using AutoMKV to reduce each movie to about 1.2-2.0GB including the AC3 audio. I would like to find something that has that kind of compression/quality, but preserves the DVD menu structure as well as the special features.
I see that since Divx 6.0, there is a Divx container format that supports menus. Does mediaportal support this? It seems to be tough to find information on how to build these files as well as play them back.
I'm certainly open to suggestions if anyone knows of any mediaportal supported formats. ratDVD looked like a GREAT option, but it doesn't appear to be supported.
