DVD storage and playback solution - main movie only (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

I've done some searching here and on other video/htpc websites trying to figure out the best way to do this:

I have lots of DVDs, most of which are converted to h.264 and play well on MP, but with some artifact from the conversion. What I'd like to do is play the main movie only from a dvd in mediaportal using Moving Pictures. This works perfectly with the h.264 converted files, but I'd like to do this with the ripped main movie vobs running off a hard drive.

Problem is if I do just the VOB, MP displays the wrong length. So I'm trying to figure out either:

1) a work around for the length issue

-or-

2) a better solution someone has to play ripped "raw" VOB main movie files from DVD directly in MP

Hi Chris.

I use a combination of IMGBURN and DVD Shrink to rip and extract the main movie, although I would suspect there are other tools/methods.

I store all my DVD's in a folder named as the movie title, and DVD Shrink creates the VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folder structure.

These are all on a network share, which the Moving Pictures plugin monitors.

If you wanted, once you have the main movie extracted, you could then convert to the format of your choice or leave in DVD format if you choose.

Hope that sort of what you are trying to achieve.

I've been using DVD shrink 3.2, re-author, choosing Main movie only and no compression, and having DVD shrink output as an iso. This seems to be working fairly well so far. Any reason to use imgburn in addition to DVD shrink?

My next challenge will be to do the same but with TV series. Still trying to decide how I'll do that.

I use DVDFab > DVDShrink > MakeMKV.

Is there an advantage in the DVDFab step? Trying to figure out if my method of just using dvd shrink is flawed.

Also, I'm thinking about using the method described in this thread for tv series:

DVDFab can do things that DVDShrink can't.

Don't want to break the forum rules, so I'll leave it at that.

Hi Chris.

I see we're on roughly the same lines here. Only reason I use Imgburn, is to reduce the time it takes to process the DVDs. Getting an iso of the whole DVD on to the hard drive, seems top be a bit quicker than to process the DVD disk directly in DVD Shrink.

From your first post, I see you were having issues with incorrect length on your ripped content. A later post indicates you are saving the ripped main movie in iso format. Just for testing, have you tried saving the content in DVD format i.e. VIDEO_TS folder with ifo, bup and vobs. This is the format I use and have not noticed any wrong length issues.

I should have been clearer - initially I was trying to rip the main movie to a vob, which wouldn't play at all, and then I changed the ext of the vob to mpg, and that's when I had the wrong length when it played.

This was all with dvd decrypter.

I then tried DVD shrink to rip the main movie and then output as an iso, which worked well.

I was a little concerned to find that most people aren't just using dvd shrink - worried that I might be missing something. But if I understand right, and to stay within forum rules, if I want to take a dvd movie from point A on the disk to point B on the hard drive, dvd shrink will work in most cases but dvd fab will have a greater chance of success in all cases.

Anyway, I've gone through about half of my library (re-ripping to iso) and so far haven't had any issues, but am considering buying dvdfab for a greater chance of success with one piece of software.
