I'm currently using EPG Collector to get EPG data from ATSC PSIP. Unfortunately it doesn't contain "Category" info. I would like to add category info so I can have some genre coloring with Mediaportal.

I read the readme but i'm still not clear on how to do this:

I open up my .ini file
Click on File> Change Program Categories> Change Custom Program Category Descriptions
Under "Category Tag" I enter "Sports"
Under "Custom Descriptions" I enter "The Big Bang Theory" without quotes of course.

I click on the save button but get an error message.
I click on Continue then Run> Collect EPG Data
I then get asked if I want to save the program categories which I do but i get the error message again.
I then just collect the epg data without saving running the current parameters.
When it's done I check the tvguide.xml file but no category data is present.

    Hi gonzo90017

    Have you read the readme?
    3.2.2 Custom categories
    =======================

EPG Centre provides facilities for maintaing custom categories from the File - Change Custom Program Category options. These can
be used where the type of data does not use categories (eg MHEG5) or the broadcaster chooses to not broadcast them.

Custom categories are matched to programmes by specifying a tag which is matched to the progamme titles and descriptions. If the
programme title or description matches the tag the programme is assigned the category.

A dialog will appear that enables the relevant information to be entered. There is no limit on the number of categories that can
    be defined.

The fields that can be entered are as follows:

    Category Tag

This field is used to identify the programme. It is matched against the title and description and if a match occurs
the programme is assigned the relevant category. The category tag is mandatory.

Special characters are used to indicate inexact matching.

If the tag is preceeded by the '<' character the tag is matched againt the beginning of the title and description.
If the tag is terminated by the '>' character the tag is matched against the end of the title and description.
If the tag is enclosed by '< and '>' the tag can appear anywhere in the title or description.

If none of these special characters is used the tag must match exactly with the title or description. The comparison is
    case insensitive.

So, for example, the following tags

    one news at 6
    <One News
    at 6>
    <News at>

will all match the program with a title or description of One News at 6.

    Custom Description

This is the category description that will be output to the XMLTV file for any matching programmes. It is mandatory.

    Media Centre Description

See Appendix 2 for details of this field. This description is optional.

    DVBLogic Description

See Appendix 3 for details of this field. This description is optional.

    DVBViewer Description

See Appendix 4 for details of this field. This description is optional.

    Examples of custom categories

    Tag: One News at 6
    Custom description: TVNZ Main News
    Media Centre description: National News,Main,isNews
    DVBLogic description: News
    DVBViewer description: 2,1

    Tag: <TVNZ News at
    Custom description: Other TVNZ News
    Media Centre description: National News,Other,isNews
    DVBLogic description:News
    DVBViewer description: 2,1

    Tag: <Johnny Depp>
    Custom Description: Johnny Depp
Media Centre description: Favourite Movie Stars,Johnny Depp,isMovie
    DVBLogic description: Movie
    DVBViewer description: 1,0

    Tag: <Angelina Jolie>
    Custom Description: Angelina Jolie
Media Centre description: Favourite Movie Stars,Angelina Jolie,isMovie
    DVBLogic description: Movie
    DVBViewer description: 1,0

Basically, your example use of "Sports" means that programmes with exact name or description "Sports" will be tagged with genre/category "The Big Bang Theory". Not quite what you want, right?

The "Custom Description" is the category.
The "Tag" is the thing that is used to match the programme.

I think if you used "<The Big Bang Theory>" as Tag and "Sports" as Custom Description your example would work.

That's exactly the way I had it yesterday but I didn't get the any category info. That's the reason I did it this way instead, thinking I was doing it wrong.

So i've tried it the correct way:

    Category Tab: <College Football>
    Custom Description: Sports

    Still no luck

As you can see in my TVGuide.xml. No category info is present.

Are you still getting errors when you save?
If so, did you try filling in the other fields?
I see you started a thread on the EPG Collector forum - very wise - and Steve says you need a fixpack.
    http://sourceforge.net/p/epgcollector/discussion/1125946/thread/6a5da395/

I think best to stick with your thread on the EPG Collector forum and come back here when you get category data in the XMLTV file. I note XMLTV files and the EPG Collector config file can be opened in any text editor. You should be able to observe your config changes being saved and confirm that the category info is injected into the output. I also note that although I originally helped with EPG Collector testing and I still occasionally answer the odd technical question, I had nothing to do with this feature. Steve is the best person to help. :)

Thank you for all your help. I just wanted to cover all my bases using various forums since doing a search gave me very little results for EPG Collector. :)
