I hear you man, I ultimately gave up and went back to a better solution. I record shows in Media Center and watch in Media Portal. Media Portal has very limited functionality recording and you may be disappointed, for example Media Portal cannot skip repeat shows, it has no mechanism to do this while Media Center does this beautifully. I obviously am not alone, there is a plugin someone made that takes Media Center Recorded files (wtv) and renames them properly...

Hopefully this will change in the future and we will get the same functionality as we do for free from MCE. :)

Not true - please read about the "check episode of already recorded programs..." setting.

Actually what he said is true. Media Portal cannot skip reruns, it can only skip shows you already have.
( "Check episode of already recorded programs to prevent duplicate recording" )
Unlike Media Center which can and does skip repeats without any fuss. :)

Plus Media Portal has no real alternative to Media Centers built in EPG guide (for the US and at the same pricepoint). My suggestion is to remove or disable Media Portals TV functionality and let Media Center do what it does so well. Use Media Portal for viewing shows. This is probably a function for US guys anyway that will never change in Media Portal and there is no point trying to beat a dead horse (believe me i have tried). *sigh* :)

Right, misunderstood what you meant - sorry. You're correct.

Wow, that's a major kick in the guts! :(
Reading over your older posts it seems like you have asked about this feature over and over again so I get that you *really* want it. Does data from mc2xml or SD even contain this information?

Just out of interest: if you had the power to get 5 features added to MP today, what would they be?

FYI: I've done some work on this feature this evening and have it very close to up and running. Just a few issues with the XMLTV plugin that are baffling me. Anyone keen to try my patch when it is complete?

The SD plugin can get episode information and convert it to "SxxExx". My recorded series episode names are save to "Series - SxxExx - Episode-name.ts" in my Recorded TV folders, so I can put them directly into TV-Series (after compressing to .mkv). Sometimes they apear as "Series - Episode-number - Episode-name.ts" Movies are not so easy to identify. A recorded TV movie might be saved as "Name - - - -.ts". Of course, I may not have my SD plugin set up right for movies.

    (examples)
Nature - S29E16 - Bears of the Last Frontier_ Arctic Wanderers.ts
    Nature - 2803 - Braving Iraq.ts
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein - - - -.ts

I'm not 100% certain but I think we're talking about different things.

What you seem to be referring to is the challenge of getting season and episode numbers/names from SD. That would allow you to use the existing setting in TV Server to prevent recording of episodes you already have. However what ap90033 seems to be very keen on is the ability to prevent recordings of episodes/movies marked in the guide as repeats or previously shown, regardless of whether they've been recorded or not.

So does SD have a "this show is a repeat" flag, or alternatively "this show is a first showing" flag?

Well first of all let me say i really really APPRECiATE that you care, it makes the issue much better that someone understands my pain :) I actually donated to MediaPortal (I dont mind I think its a wonderful product) as I didnt want to be a jerk wanting everything but not actually contributing, I tried mc2xml and I actually Paid $20 for the full featured version but in the end it didnt do a great job of grabbing shows. It did not seem to be 100 percent and sometimes it was just inaccurate. Right now at the top of my list is for mediaportal to have the ability to easily get EPG data just like MediaCenter does and if it did it would know if a show is a repeat about 95% of the time.
so, if i had 5 features added and the skies the limit
    1. Great United States (Especially Over the Air) EPG. (seems like the US gets hosed)
    2. Integration of Media Center Master. I am a lifetime Premium member and this tool is handy.
    3. Easier Setup for TV Tuners. Disclaimer- Its been a long time since I even tried and yes I did get it working but I remember it was a pain setting up (I have 3 dual tuners HD Homerrun).
    4. Video Converter - Automated utility that would take my 8-12 GIG recorded shows (currently in Media Center) and convert the file to a smaller format at minimal loss of quality. (like MCE Buddy sort of) with really good instructions for dummies like me...
    5. Commercial Skipping - Utility like comskip that is setup either to mark a tv show so the program will automatically skip the commercial, or actually remove the commercials from the file and shrink the filesize.

If I had these I would have to pinch myself to make sure I wasnt dreaming. :)

I see in the program description whether the show is "New (date)" or "First Shown (date)". This isn't always consistently displayed in the guide, but I think that is mostly caused by program broadcasters not providing complete information to EPG providers. I sometimes look for repeat episodes that I may have missed in their first or most recent broadcast - sometimes a weekday show is repeated in the weekend lineup.

I was thinking that Series/Season/Episode info would be helpful in determining whether a program was previously viewed/recorded in a database record. Maybe even flagged to check if the episode is in the local TV-Series db.
