No stupid question. ;)
Yes, that's to output the clean DD/DTS signal to my 6.1 sound system receiver. Just enter ffdshow's audio configuration (windows start menu) and set "AC3" and "DTS" to "S/PDIF" (see appended screenshot). This way AC3 and DTS are not converted to PCM by the computer, but processed by the receiver. Best quality you can get for digital audio.
All other settings must not be touched, depends on what audio codecs you wanna have processed by ffdshow, of course. The appended screenshot is just a sample.

Thanks for the description.
Also, to get back on the subject, it is solved. The tearing of the video when
played using the internal player disappeared once I did a restore to default
settings in ATI Catalyst. I do not know what option I may have set that
caused the disturbance but now it seems to work again. So for anyone
having the same issue with an ATI based board, to a reset and try again.

I'd like to add that I was experiencing a similar problem with an NVidia GeForce 6600, where I was getting tearing, only in MP, regardless of the Exclusive DirectX mode setting. When I read that you went back and reset your ATI settings, I took a closer look at my own NVidia settings (Driver Ver: 6.14.0010.9371)...

I fixed the problem by going through the NVidia tray icon resetting all options in the Performance and Quality Settings sub-menu to their defaults -- though I had never manually set them. The only change this seemed to have made was setting Anti-aliasing from '2x' to 'Application Controlled'.

Thanks for the hint!
