Hi,
No, I failed to resolve it. Ended up uninstalling MP as I simply could not get it to work.
Every time I tried to do an install it appeared that MP did not create a DB 'profile' or whatever it is called.
I appreciate it is a community project and open source. But it really has to be usable to someone without any depth of 'programming skills'.

Ye got the same issue and I damn well know I am missing something obvious. Followed the instructions at SQL Server 2008 - MediaPortal Wiki
to do the SQL 2008 install (Win 7, 64 bit). Then back to the media portal install and it pops up the select database option, select Microsoft SQL 2005 (doesn't give a 2008 option) and no matter what username I give it fails.

Ah figured it out.
Despite doing C:\SQLEXPR\setup.exe /Q /CONFIGURATIONFILE="C:\SQLEXPR\MPSQL2008.ini" /SAPWD=mediaportal
it was failing. Checked the SQL server config and it was running the local system account as the login.
So back to the SQL setup and entered SA as the username and the PC password as the password and it worked.
So this is the SQL logon window

Then during the media portal install select advanced

Select the SQL server is already present

and finally when the SQL server window comes up tick the SQL 2005 box (even if 2008 is installed) set the user ID as sa
and user your computers login password.

If it fails because you have not set a windows login password (don't think SQL will accept a blank password) then set one up and then follow the instructions at
Make Windows 7 or Vista Log On Automatically - How-To Geek
to get windows to log in automatically.
Hope that works for you as it did for me. So far.
Now to figure out Imon, Compro TV tuner and wireless keyboard crap. And why the rotten box turns itself on sometimes.

:)
