    All,

Simple question...but probably not a simple answer :D

Which is the prefered decoder? AC3Filter or ffdShow? And why?

    Thanks,

    J. :D

I try to K.I.S.S. and while I thought the built-in MPA would allow me to passthrough DD and DTS I've found a couple of the .mkv files I've obtained don't properly announce they're DTS which causes broken audio. Instead I'm now trying SPDIFer by AC3Filter. It only does the passthrough portion of AC3Filter - no encoding, no manipulation and it sticks with my philosophy of "simple."

I was using AC3 Filter because I read that it is better for HD audio pass-thru but recently I've been having stuttering problems with DTS audio. I don't think it was the AC3Filter but after removing it and installing the SAF v5 beta, the stuttering disappeared. Now the audio is passed thru using ffdshow audio only and I don't have stuttering problems with the HD files. Now I only need to fix the MP3 2 channel audio and I'll be set!

FFDShow supports 5.1 AAC properly, whereas AC3Filter does not. However with pass through of AC3, DTS and DD5.1 I prefer ac3filter to handle this. So I actually have mediaportal setup to use both. ac3filter for pass through only, and ffdshow loads if any decoding needs to be done.

That sounds like something Id want. How did you do that? How to tell MP to act like that.
Could you explain how you did that? :)

im not at home right now

there are options in ffdshow and ac3filter configuration that specify in what situations it should load, just tick/untick the relevant boxes. i can't remember if you need to have ac3filter enable for post processing or not (try without first). you should just be able to figure it out using trial an error. im very sure i didn't even have to change the merits, it just a matter of tick/unticking boxes +/- use ac3filter for post processing.

    So ffdshow
    untick ac3 , dts

    & ac3filter
untick everything except ac3 , dts

I agree, sounds like a good solution. Configuration of ffdshow and AC3Filter is clear. But could you please take at look at your Video Post-Processing configuration? I don't know if I have to include AC3Filter, ffdshow Audio Decoder (like described in SAF tuturial), both or simply nothing.

    :D
