MP currently can't use technologies like Cleartype, well it can but my experiments with it so far haven't proved to be very useful (there are points in the code that can be changed to change the way that the font files are generated).
So what do you do to get rid of the harsh edges? Open the font .png files in an application such as Photoshop and apply a guassian blur of between 0.2 and 0.4 to the file and save, I've yet to come across any messed up text as a result of doing this and IMO MP now looks super awesome on the TFT boxes that have this font trick applied.
And yeah I know the idea of applying a blur to improve the appearance of text sounds crazy but for me its worked

I also believe that this trick does work on a CRT but that could well be my ancient eyes playing tricks on me - they are 30 years old after all.
The larger the font the less applicable this trick is.
