Hi guys

I've borrowed a friends DVB-S2 USB box while he is on holiday to see whether I want to buy one for myself, at the moment all my receivers are DVB-T.

I'm having problems getting it set up in MP1.4 on an XP SP3 box.

I appear to have detected the four free to air HD channels on Astra 2d but can't view them, this may be due to problems with my anti-virus which I am still trying resolve, but I am also wondering if I have scanned correctly.

I tried the software that comes with the box and it has found BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, ITV HD, and CH4 HD without problem and I've done some test recordings, I've set it to capture in TS format, but the files that it is producing are MPEG-2, I thought these channels were being broadcast in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC?

So I am wondering if I am actually receiving a DVB-S channel rather than DVB-S2, I know BBC used to broadcast HD on DVB-S but then switched to DVB-S2, but do they still broadcast HD on the SD system? and what about the other channels?

Sorry if the question is daft but would appreciate any help.

Thanks

    Hello PoBear

If you're going to use MP 1.4 on XP, make sure you get the patch from here:

If you found the channels then it isn't likely to be a scanning problem. I suspect codec configuration is the problem... but without log files that is total speculation. Please post your log files if you want help. :)

With regard to format: make sure you are not confusing container and encoding.
TS is a container format. Its full name is "MPEG 2 transport stream". As a container format, it can wrap h.264, MPEG 2 or MPEG 1 video streams (as well as various audio, subtitle, data and private stream formats). So, just because it is MPEG 2 TS doesn't mean it doesn't contain h.264/AVC video.

I note that MediaPortal does not re-encode. What you record is [almost] a bit for bit copy of what comes from the tuner.

So I am wondering if I am actually receiving a DVB-S channel rather than DVB-S2, I know BBC used to broadcast HD on DVB-S but then switched to DVB-S2, but do they still broadcast HD on the SD system? and what about the other channels?
Well, you can check the tuning parameters and compare them with what is being broadcast.

    Thanks guys.

I didn't realise that you could get H.264 in an MPEG-2 container so that may answer one question.

This is a new install on my recording machine, so I only have limited time slots to do any work on it, before I need to clean it up for recording.

I've cleared the AV problem so I'm no longer running at 100% cpu. :)

I'm still having problems connecting from a remote machine, but have found some articles that offer some solutions.

When I get to the point where I am stuck I'll post logs.

    Thanks for your help
