For nVidia 2xx series, you need a minimum of a GT220 to get pixel-adaptive de-interlacing for HD. The G210/GT220/GT240 all have the latest video decoding unit and support 8-channel PCM sound over HDMI.

Blimey, must be seeing things, Spagleknas promoting Nvidia graphics over ATI LOL, actually considered the range of nvidia cards between the 220-250, they all look pretty good, and of course if you want to play the latest games, then the 250 is the one to go for without breaking the bank, just not at full gameplay settings.

Still very hard to find good nvidia passive cooled cards available in the UK, but I'm sure someone will take up the challenge and point out some great bargains :)

ps. how are ATI's drivers nowadays, thought they had stopped breaking things now.

PD: I believe that nVidia card was requested :D
Anyway, no fanboy here ... I just might consider getting a nVidia next time (I've had my share of ATi-driver probs).
In general, ATi has had better price/HTPC-perf. IMO, and more passive alternatives.

Well i am open to ATI suggestions if anybody has managed to run a stable setup with one? Only reason i asked about Nvidia is because ive always used them due to reliability.

I just got a GT220 recently... upgraded from a 8500GT and the difference is amazing... I love it.

The issue with the GT2xx series is the fan-noise... I got the ASUS and it's loud... I sent an email to Zalman about heat sinks for that family of cards and they said they did NOT have one... so, I ended up going with the Arctic Cooling Acellero L2 Pro (Arctic Cooling)... I haven't got it yet, so I can't say how much quieter, but all accounts are that it will be significant.

There are two passive GT220s on the market, but I can't find any to order in Canada...

    Good luck.

wow, some of the 220's come with 1Gb memory, though reading some of the reviews it almost seems like the 220 doesnt really know what its for and emphasis isnt really on video capabilities.

What about something from the Nvidia 9 series? The 9500 and 9600's seem pretty reasonably priced?

EDIT: Ive now narrowed it down to ATI 4550 or 4670, both passive, and both cheaper than the Nvidia 9 series. Unless anyone can give me any reasons not to get either of the above?

btw, i nearly considered the Nvidia 220 as recommended by some on here, but the fan noise does seem to be a common complaint.

The 9500GT works fine with MP + HD content - I run an XFX card which is pretty quiet.

Yes - nobody seems to have implemented a temperature controlled fan on a GT220 board yet.....
