Thanks to comments on this forum I now seem to have the right options for my audio (MP 1.3). I have LAV set for all audio but now have MP for the renderer. I have an optical link to my Sony A/V processor. I receive UK Freesat and Freeview HD channels. The Freeview HA-AAC was a problem with LAV. But with the MP renderer a quick test seems to show a fairly consistant volume accross the different audio types and voices seem to be in sync. I get the Blue Light come on for 5.1 on my Sony amp when it is received which always makes me feel happy

In the UK 5.1 is broadcast LATM-AAC. F9 confirms this. So I would need to post process to convert to AC3. Post processing does give me 5.1 AC3 but as I said AC3Filter was very unreliable (only worked occasionally) and FFDshow makes the video/audio badly out of sync. The MP audio renderer AC3 enocode option sounds promising but for some reason it just doesn't work at all for me. I have uninstalled and reinstalled MP and all the codecs but still no luck.

Tom any chance you could post what settings you have ticked / unticked in LAV setup and MP Audio Renderer? Sounds like it is working for you. No idea what I am doing wrong!

I attach the settings. I am no expert but this seems to work. However, I have noticed that it is very easy for the audio to get out of synch with the video. Press "Pause" and then "Play" and it is likely to be out of synch. Press "Stop" and then "Resume from.." will bring it back together again. Also any
wobbles (and I get a few of them) and it is quite likely to throw it out of synch again

Try unticking the 'enable timestretch' option in MPAR, that helped with the synch issue with me.

Only just found this thread, I guess you have seen the WASAPI option in the wiki <here>?

I think, as Jameson_uk said though, this won't work with toslink (SPDIF) as it can't carry PCM 5.1 audio, but would work with HDMI.

Thanks. I tried this. It did seem to make the synchronisation more consistent so that is good but unfortunately it was not 100%

I had previously used HDMI but the problem was I couldn't syphon off a stereo analogue signal to feed other amplifiers to broadcast music in other rooms

Tried all the settings as above (and many other combinations) still cant get MPAR to encode to AC3 at all and any attempt at adding codecs and setting up post processing causes AV sync problems (as well as breaking windows media center, which doesn't go down too well). I wonder if anyone has been successful at getting this working properly or is everyone just using HDMI for audio now?

Yes. See my posts above. It does work for me for Freeview - my amp says 5.1 Dolby digital on some HD broadcasts. I have to use the same renderer for Freesat as you can't choose which renderer to use for which codec.

Of course the system doesn't tell me which source it used (I wish MP would tell me). I had set the system to record C4 HD (it is set to prioritise satellite) and then recorded part of the BBC HD Preview for which it had to use the Freeview tuner and they always broadcast this with the 5.1 setting on

The problem is it can go out of synch after pressing pause/play

I have had some success by enabling "Dolby digital live" in windows sound devices setup. This is an option with newer m/boards and sound cards. I'm not sure if this is real 5.1 but it sounds like it is working using the BBC test card. In MP I have set LAV as the audio decoder under TV and switched back to the default windows audio renderer instead of MP audio renderer and turned off all post processing. I get what sounds like 5.1 with no sync problems! Not sure if there is a down side to using Dolby digital live though or what it does really but I'll try it for a while.
