Hi all,

I've recently retired my MP2 setup for my main HTPC and gone back to separates, but I wanted to retain the ability to play my media on my bedroom setup, which used to be client #2.

After finding that I could not upgrade from a client only install, I decided to completely remove MP2 and all of its sub components (Dokan, LAV filters, .net etc) and do a completely fresh install of V2.5 (I was running 2.2.3 before - old yes, but it was stable).

The 2.5 install went well but It failed to import more than a handful of my media library despite being left running for 24 hours. I had by now decided that I didn't like the new user interface anyway, so I uninstalled and re installed 2.2.3 to go back to what I knew and liked.

This didn't exactly go smoothly as I got repeated "insufficient privileges to start service" errors (remember I had installed MP2 on this machine before and apart from the uninstall I had not changed anything). In the end I uninstalled again and removed the database files. The next install seemed to go well so I started re-importing my library.

All went fine until I tried playing a ripped DVD (vob format). No sound. I had sound for playing audio files and also the vob files would play in VLC, so this must be an issue specific to the way the video player is handling audio. It was then that I noticed that the LAV filters had not re-installed. Odd, as I thought this was part or the MP2 install. I went to the LAV website and installed the latest version but still no luck.

I do recall that previously on this machine I had many different audio and video codecs to choose from. Now I only seem to have the Microsoft one. For information my bedroom HTPC only has stereo sound via the 3.5mm speaker jack.

Anyone got any ideas what has gone wrong here?

My guess (and that is all that it is) would be that either:
    • The audio codec used by that VOB file is not installed on your system, or
    • The codec is installed but it has not been selected for use during playback.
In MP1's "Config" utility, there is a panel where the user selects which audio codec to use. MP2 does not have that config utility; instead it is all done via settings panels within the MP2 client itself. So navigate around the MP2 settings panels to see if you can find one where codecs are enabled and disabled.

This is the odd thing: I haven't uninstalled anything which was't part of my previous MP2 install so I would have expected that any drivers required would be re-installed when I re-installed MP2.

However, having completely uninstalled and re-installed again, I can confirm that the MP2 installer is not installing the LAV filters during setup like it used to. In fact if I go into the "custom install" options and inspect the LAV filter section it even says that "this requires 0kb space on your hard drive".

Furthermore, it seems that if I download and install the LAV filters manually, then their presence is not recognised by MP2.

I know where codec settings are, but I only have the Microsoft DTV codec available for everything apart from the Splitter, and I am yet to find an option for that which works (although I am pretty sure that I used the Microsoft DTV for that in the past). As I wasn't expecting so many issues I did not take a note of my previous settings.

Is it possible that my preferred version of MP2 is simply too old to go back to?

I think that codecs need to be registered with Windows, in order for MP2 to be able to use them.
If installing LAV did not register the codecs, you need to do this manually. Try typing How to register codecs in Windows in the Google search field, and follow the instructions resulting.

    Fixed, I think.

Certainly the vintage MP2 installer that I was using no longer installs the LAV filters. I can only assume that these were never part of the install package itself, but rather downloaded during the install, and that link no longer exists. Shame that the installer doesn't indicate this.

Last time when I installed the LAV filters manually, I only installed the 64 bit versions but this time I chose to install the entire package and now they show up in MP2.

Currently re-importing my media library and then I think I should be good to go.

Thanks for the pointers! They helped.
