Grouping Movies (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to group some of my movies. I have some boxsets like "The Pacific", "Planet Earth", etc. I've tried a couple things and each is only partly successful. First I tried using the 'Join' in the Movie Importer. This gave me my one movie entry in the list but when I select it I just get a picture of some CD's representing the different disks. It does work but representative pictures of a disc isn't very informative, I suppose it's fine for something like the Pacific where the episodes are in order but not for Planet Earth. It would be nice to be able to show some information for what is on each disk so that when I'm looking for the episode "Caves" I don't have to start and stop each disc blindly until I find it.

The next thing I tried is using a custom category and filters. I can make the category and get the filters working though I still have to get something figured out to show each disc's contents rather than each disc just having the generic IMDB cover art, and also each movie (or disc in this case) shows up with the same name with no indication of what disc # it is. However on problem with this is that when I make this custom category which shows up in the menuing under All Movies, none of the other movies show (eventhough the filter editor indicates that it should) so the only thing that now shows in the list is my custom categories.

So with either method I'm almost there. I'd appreciate some help to get either method ironed out. Or is there a better way to go about this?

Thanks,
Ryan

The filters & categories work fine. Moving Pictures doesn't support box sets yet. Each episode of planet earth is not a seperate movie on imdb. Also on imdb it is labeled as "tv series", therefore it will probably never appear as a box set in moving pictures.

Planet earth is on thetvdb.org so works well with tv series plugin.

    Therefore use my tv series

no, it works fine, your are simply trying to do something it wasnt designed for, its not designed to deal with TV shows / episodes, of which "The Pacific" and Planet Earth are

the MP-TvSeries plugin is designed exactly for what your trying to do

I understand what you're saying about using TVseries plug in, and I am going to check it out. But I'm still wondering about the menuing/filters in Moving Pictures.... When I add a custom category inside another category, the contents of the parent category disappear except for the category I just created. So inside any category I can only list sub-catgories or individual movies but not both. Is that by design? Is it a bug that is going to be worked out? Or is there a way to make it do that?

You can add mini-series to MovingPictures and group them together, but it requires a bit of work.

IMDb stores each episode seperate, so by adding the IMDb tt-ID to the filename, you can force a correct link to the episode page. The problem however is that the title at IMDb makes no reference to the episode order, it only shows the title of them. So in the example of "The Pacific" you would get the following order (see how the IMDb tt-IDs are all in order, but not correct in episode order):

    "The Pacific" Basilone (tt1576598 = 1x02)
    "The Pacific" Gloucester/Pavuvu/Banika (tt1576599 = 1x04)
    "The Pacific" Guadalcanal/Leckie (tt1576600 = 1x01)
    "The Pacific" Home (tt1576601 = 1x10)
    "The Pacific" Iwo Jima (tt1576602 = 1x08)
    "The Pacific" Melbourne (tt1576603, 1x03)
    "The Pacific" Okinawa (tt1576604 = 1x09)
    "The Pacific" Peleliu Airfield (tt1576605 = 1x06)
    "The Pacific" Peleliu Hills (tt1576606 = 1x07)
    "The Pacific" Peleliu Landing (tt1576607 = 1x05)

Which you can then correct manually by editing the title or sortby field in the manager tab.

This adds up to a lot of work, which MP-TVSeries is much better equiped for to handle. It does mean you will have to allow MP-TVSeries to get season and episode information out of the filenames, so for example you have to use "The Pacific 1x01.avi", etc, after which MP-TVSeries will do everything else via thetvdb.com.

    Enjoy.

Yes that's by design (unfortunately) -> If you want grouping of movies you'll have to wait for Issue 229 - moving-pictures - Allow grouping of movies in the movie list - A movies plugin for the MediaPortal media center application. - Google Project Hosting

You can star it to show your support...

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah it has been a bit of work trying to get MovPic to play nice. I setup MovPic to show each disk (renamed to indicate disc#) and edited the summary to show it's contents so I'm good there and TBH that's really all I was after... just wanted it to show up in the movies list as a single entity and then expand out when selected. But as indicated I can't do that so I created a category in the root menu called 'Movies' that has only movies and then another category in the root called 'Box sets and Series' that has my stuff like the pacific etc. Which works, just not as slick as I would like it to be.

I started getting into TVseries last night and it was a bit of a disaster. 100% of my media is ripped Blurays using AnyDVD and the original file structure is intact so my media isn't in avi's or mkv's or anything like that. I imported about 12 'episodes' worth as a test and got 394 files returned and it identified none of it. It's tryng to add each m2ts file as a separate episode as best I can tell rather than it pickup on the fact that The Pacific, Disc 1, Episode 1 includes 20 some odd files or so. I found a little guide over in the TVseries section to re-author bluray rips to make them work with TVseries. I'm going to tinker with that and see where I get.

    Thanks for all the input!
