Seagate (Barracuda 7 and 8 series) do not support AAM.
Neither do the latest .9 and .10 series.

I found mine don't have it turned on; do you know of anyway of other than the Samsung floppy disk DOS utility to turn it on (Silent Drive linked above only does IDE).

you could try it with the cd image of hitachi feature tool found here:

    Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB (£90) or
    Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB (£95)
where in the UK are these prices from ? i couldn't see any under £100 at all for a 500gb HDD.

I got the WD from Overclockers.co.uk just turned up a minute ago, on special this week. Although postage is a bit steep, I had a discount to use up due a previous mistake by them. Samsung was available at Komplett Everywhere else I looked these 2 drives where £10-£30 more (before postage). Used Overclockers due to discount I had to use up, pretty much covered the £8 courier fee.

New drive's great, its quieter than my 200GB Samsungs, which are fairly quiet anyway, haven't actually turned the AAM on yet, runs about 36C on standby, 40C under use.
