Hauppauge HVR-2250 Kit Remote non-functional (1 Viewer)

This kit has a non-USB 45-key MCE IR receiver that plugs into the card with a 2.5mm three-ring jack. It does not appear to work with the built-in MediaPortal remote functionality.

Here's what I've done so far, after googling for two days straight:
  • disabled services under 3rd party checks
  • tried Hauppauge remote, MCE remote, and a combination of the two
  • installed the latest IR32.exe
  • removed other Hauppauge remotes from the HauppaugeHCW.xml
  • minor edits to the iremote.ini
The best results I have so far have come from editing the irremote.ini, but I can't find the commands and proper syntax for all 45 keys. Mediaportal will "ding" when I press a button, as if it received the IR command and doesn't know what to do with it. Does someone else have abetter solution?

    I have a hvr-2200 with the same remote and it works fine (except using the green button to start MP).
    You should install IR32 and then select Hauppauge remote in MP config.
    The IR icon in the system tray should disappear when MP or MP config is started, and reappear when these are closed, so the irremote.ini won't actually do anything.
    I get a lot of crashes with this remote when resuming from sleep (at least once every 5 or so resumes), the remote stops working and once MP is closed an error popup shows HCWhelper.exe has crashed. Restart MP and it works fine again.
    So not the best remote to use, but it should work good enough if you can put up with a few hiccups.

    Wow, thanks for the quick response. I followed your instructions, and unfortunately now MP doesn't even give me the "ding". Still not working. WMC recognizes the remote and is fully functional.

    Is there even a slight chance that IR32.exe is looking at the irremote.ini? As I experiment with commands to the [Default] section, the corresponding buttons are beginning to work. Problem is, there's no conditional functionality and I can't find all the codes.

    For what its worth, I found that both the drivers on the CD and the latest drivers on the Hauppage site gave me BSODs when scanning channels, then I found these: http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?topic=12280.0 and they work perfectly, no BSODs.

    Also, here's how I got the MCE Jewel to start MediaPortal:

    Under [Default] change MCEJEWEL to :

    MCEJEWEL={run(C:\Progra~2\Teamme~1\Mediap~1\Mediaportal.exe)}

    I really want this remote to just work, but I don't think its worth any more time. Next time Newegg runs a Rosewill MCE with USB dongle on sale, I'll go that route.

    Do you have more than one remote selected in MP config? Only select one.
    Also select "learn" in the hauppauge tab, then make sure your remote type at the bottom is the 45 button remote. Then select start learning and press the highlighted buttons.
    Does the IR icon is system tray disappear? If not then MP hasn't taken control of the IR.

    Had to change GRNPOWER rather than MCEJEWEL in irremote.ini and now it works, thanks.

    Great questions. Answers below.
    • Only Hauppauge remote selected.
    • The IR icon does not disappear when I start MP config. Key presses move the cursor and such.
    • If I close IR.exe from the tray and start the learning process, any remote key pressed will enter a "0" as the key code. This produces very bizarre effects in MediaPortal
    Any other suggestions?

    The icon not disappearing means MP is not taking control as it should.
    From here on I'm just guessing as I have never had a problem getting it to work.
    Reinstall IR and reboot, would be my first guess.
    Reinstall MP if that doesn't work.

    Thanks for the help - looks like its time to get a new remote. Incidentally, if the Hauppauge remote is checked, the IR icon does disappear, as if MP were assuming control of the remote.

    In the meantime, if anyone else has this same problem, here's how I got most of the keys to work.

    Don't check any remotes in the MP config panel.

    In irremote.ini, under [Applications] add:

    I've used it in the past no problem.

    You shouldn't need IR32. Download the hcwcirconfig tool from Hauppauge's website (in the 2250 support accessories section), and use it to set the card to operate the receiver as an MCE compatible receiver. It will then tell you to reboot. After reboot, the receiver will be in device manager as an ehome receiver. From there, use as though you're using an MCE remote and receiver.
