HD5550 and shocking image with big MKV files (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

I'm using mediaportal for sometime now but I have a problem when watching movies. Sometimes the movie isn't playing smoothly, it's shocking not extreemly but, just to much. I experiance this "shocking" when watching 1080P big MKV files.

Is this because i should upgrate my videocard? A also tryed a HD6570 but the movie kept shocking. Maybe if I try my HD6950 it will stop shocking, but that kind of videocard in my HTPC is just not the way to go. I think that the HD5550 I'm using should be able to play the 1080P MKV files without shookings.

So i guess it has something to do with my videocard drivers, videocard driver configuration or the Codec I'm using.

What i tryed:
- Updated the videocard driver -> No results
- Resetted the videocard driver to it's defaults -> No results
- Reinstalled SAF 6.0 codec -> No results
- Reinstalled the complete PC -> No results

Note: I'm using the build in default movie player

What would be the best approach to find the problem that choosing the shocking play of 1080P files?

Maybe try either an nVidia Card or an 32Bit OS.

Hi ejtje,

Please generate some logs, as the cause of the stutter can vary greatly.

As a side note: What Frame Rate do your MKVs have and what frame rate does your TV use (50 Hz?). I would suggest to use MPs built in Dynamic Refresh Rate option to change to the fitting frame rate (many movies are 24 or 23,976. This will result in dropping frames every x seconds and can be seen as a stutter).

Maybe radical, but i think it is caused due to amd's driver-problems wich raising here (and not only here) in the closer past. But indeed, maybe somebody find another solution in the logs. That was really necessarily need to say explicitily. lol'ed

A new OS will set me back about 80 euro's, a other videocard 50 euro's, and this will not guarante a sollution. So you advise I will keep to a later state in my solution finding.

Tonight (european time zone) I will make the required log files, I guess you need the logs just after i played a problem MKV file. Am I right?

The answer to your questions:
- What Frame Rate do your MKVs have?
They are: 23.98FPS

- What frame rate does your TV use? (50 Hz?).
Is does 100Hz See the specs:KDL-40W5500 (KDL40W5500, KDL40W5500U) : Overview : TV & home cinema : Sony

Tonight i will try using the Dynamic Refresh Rate option, but do not yet now how this works and how to configure this. Do you know if there is a guide for this configuration?

I report back to you with the logs and my findings of the dynamic refresh rate configuration.

I play both BluRay and 1080p MKV-files on a Radeon 3200 graphics-card. So your card is most definately quick enough.

Hello all,

The Dynamic refresh rate enambled/disabled didn't change a thing, So i guess i did something wrong.
A made 4 logs during the testing proces:

Log 1 (19_03): (mediaportal debug log without pluggins and Dynamic refresh rate disabled)
Log 1 (19_15): (mediaportal debug log with pluggins and Dynamic refresh rate disabled)
Log 1 (19_38): (mediaportal debug log without pluggins and Dynamic refresh rate enabled)
Log 1 (19_40): (mediaportal debug log with pluggins and Dynamic refresh rate enabled)

I didn't see any difference so I installed Fraps a tool that will dispay the output FPS of you graphic card, with an without the dynamic refresh rate enabled the FPS dropt to 24FPS when the movie started playing. In the menu the FPS was 50FPS and some times dropping to 48 during srolling through movie list.

The last test I have done is to use the mediaplayer classic to run the same movie. I did see that in this case the FPS where way less stabel and even dropping to al low 20FPS. But this only happens when playing this specific MKV movie file others keep at the 24FPS mark.

For the making of the logs I played every time the same movie, other movies can have the same shocking effects.

Please look at the attached logs, I have looked into the files but find it hard to find the problem, there is so much info in those logges.
