Okay, everything is pretty much working except for the play back of HDV (1080i x 1440) Mpeg 2 transport files. Media portal will start the playback of the file but within a few seconds the play back starts to stutter and becomes very choppy.

CPU loading when playing back a file is less than 50%.

I can playback the same file with VLC with no problems.

I've removed the ATI AVIO codecs along with running a check on all installed codecs.

Okay, I upgraded the CPU to a AMD Phenom II 920 and playback of the HDV files is still horrible. Using the Shift-!-F1 toggle I'm getting about 16 frames a second playback and hundreds of dropped frames. Watching the performance in the task windows shows the CPU load at just 8%.

Playing the same video in VLC uses 2% to 3% of the CPU.

Both sound and video are choppy.

Does anyone else playback HDV with media portal? The format has been in use since 2004 and is a standard for Sony, JVC and Canon HD cameras.

Any suggestion of where to post a 10 second file?

I'll have to create it tonight for 10 seconds the file will be around 40 megs.

I've uploaded a 20 second sample that causes MediaPortal to skip.

The link to the file is

20 Second Test.mpg

The file is in the HDV format 1440x1080, 29.97 frame rate,
Max video rate is 25 mbits, average is 18 mbits and the encoding is variable.
Audio is MP2, 48K sample rate and 224 rate, 16 bit stereo

While I was creating this sample I played around with the rates on other samples and if I reduce the video rate to 20 Mbits max the video will play. I'm going to create a few more samples at different rates and see when it stops playing.

thanks,
Bill

Okay I've tried several different bit rates and seems that anything over 21.5 mbits fails.

Of course on another slower computer I have to drop down to 18 mbits.

Of course on both of these computers the cpu load is still around 20% to 30%.

I've put together some 10 second clips at different bit rates and formats that cause issues within Media Portal and uploaded them to rapidshare.

These clips all play correctly on either system with VLC.

On the Phenom II 920 system inside of Media Portal, the 720P and 20 mbit HDV (1080i) play the rest HDV2, 1080i HD and 1080P HD fail.

On the Phenom 8450 - none of the clips will play correctly inside Media Portal.

Here are the clips:

HDV 20 mbits

HDV2 35 mbits

720p HD

1080p HD

All four clips are of the same subject and are 10 seconds long.

Hello.
I tryed you 20-sec-test.mpg, and on Intel Atom i have ~50% CPU usage - perfect playback.
What MPEG2 decoder are you using?

So i suggest you to try my SAF solution with PowerDVD MPEG2 decoder addon, should be working perfectly.

Currently I have everything set to the default decoders. I've tried all decorders that were on the systems (ATI, Cyberlink, ffdshow and others) with no luck. Have not tried your SAF package and will give it a try when I get home.

What is your Atom in? Daughter has one of the Acer Netbooks and while ISO DVDs and TV work great on it via Media Portal she can't watch the raw HD footage of her meets.

thanks,
Bill

Yes, all the time (1440 x 1080i @ 50Hz in my case) - using PDVD7 video codec normally.

One thing I've found is that HDV works much better when created/re-muxed to MPEG-2 program stream files. MP seems to use it's own internal splitter for MPEG-2 transport streams (i.e. the one it uses for live TV) and this doesn't seem to work very well for HDV files.

I use VideoRedo for re-muxing, but there's other tools around.
