That card should do..... my personal preference is to try and find passively cooled cards as I like a quiet HTPC - less fans = less noise.

If your serious about getting into HD and hardware acceleration, check out Hoborg's SAF. It's basically a codec pack of codecs aimed at HD

With this you won't need to install PDVD 8 itself.

BTW, if you don't want to use SAF, you can just install the trial version of PDVD8 then uninstall it. It very nicely (or annoyingly depending on your point of view) leaves its filters behind and registered after uninstallation. I personally think PDVD has a better MPEG 2 decoder than MPV as well.

    Thanks!

I'm with you on wanting something quiet, and when I'm able, I want to build a HTPC from parts I choose instead of parts I have leftover. But till then, I'm just trying to do the best with what I have. And getting a card for $5 is something that I can easily pass by the Bride.

Then at some point, I'll need to buy and set it up to work with a remote control. once I can have this machine set up and easy for her to use, it makes a new PC a easier sell.

because to honest, for what I really want, I need a new MOBO/CPU Graphics card for both 3-D gaming and HD, etc etc etc...

This is more a prototype/short term solution and a great learning experience to boot!

Thanks again, I'll order the card now, and I'm sure this is only the start of my begging for advise!

Actually in this scenario a louder system might be better. If its quiet-ish and works then its a harder sell as to why you need a quadcore with 8 gigs of ram running DirectX 10. However if it works, is a bit noisy and some files you just can't play then you get her hooked on it and make buying a new HTPC from scratch sound like its her idea......

I'm not there yet.....I am hoping she wonders why the desktop is so quiet and the HTPC has some fans whiring.....
